Guerilla Growing Gyms, Have Questions
    #19095726 - 11/06/13 02:41 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Oi, so I made a post a few weeks ago about some gyms I had found at the park (the spore print gave them away), and since have decided to rip up the chunks of mushrooms and put them in a moist pile of woodchips over a rotting log that I partially buried in the ground. I have a few questions about my unorthodox methodology.

1.) Will this work? I've heard rumors of people having success with guerilla grows in outdoor cultivation projects, but never without first having established a colony of mycelium in a jar indoors. The reason I didn't inoculate a sterile jar was rather obvious to me at the time... the samples themselves were not sterile. Maybe I'm just a newb, which I am, but I don't know anything about 'cleaning' samples before inoculation, certainly not whole, wild-picked fruit bodies. It seemed like a waste to wait, so I just made a little bed for them and partially covered them with mulch.
2.) If this does work, how long will it take (typically) for the mycelium colony to establish itself on hardwood sawdust and woodchips? The area is pretty moist, with a little sun during a couple hours of the day, but I'm concerned that it WILL need the heat of the summer to properly establish itself. Next season probably better for fruiting? Bear in mind that these are a gymnopilus species, I'm not sure if that makes a difference, and that I'm attempting to colonize an area using the actual mushrooms.
3.) How long would it take for this spot to colonize and begin producing fruit bodies? Months? Years? I'm a patient fellow, and don't have a problem with leaving this spot (and another I prepared) for future hunters. But it would be neat to see fruit bodies as early as next season. Is there a way I can encourage my patch to colonize and grow, such as covering the spot with a tarp to trap the humidity?

Yeah, so, this isn't a high-tech operation at all, I just found some old fruit bodies, redistributed them at the original location and several others, and left them with a little water. I want to know how long it takes (typically) for nature to take its course. Sorry for the wasteful post... this is my only project, since I don't currently have access to an indoor area.

It's possible that it will work, but it will take a long time to colonize and you're risking a lot of other things colonizing your substrate instead. I have never heard of "guerrilla grows" for mushrooms at all, only cannabis. Mushroom cultivation requires a degree of sterility that is just hard to obtain outdoors unless you have a ridiculous amount of fully-colonized spawn.

My money is on nothing happening. Gyms really need a niche habitat and very few members have had success even growing them indoors.

In order to take a sterile sample from an outdoor mushroom, you must slice the stem in half with a sterile instrument, in a sterile environment, and take a tiny core sample from the middle sterile part of the fungus and transplant that to some sterile agar to grow some more mycelium. I guess you could put it directly to sterile grains or hardwood but again you're risking contamination or simply a nonstarter.

Thanks so much, mylfgur. I had a feeling nothing is going to happen, but I have some funny luck. I was hoping to take notes and do a sort of project if anything did come up. :shrug:

No problem Mycognome. I believe that Sunstone has successfully done gym grows, I'm sure you can find some indoor gym projects in the grow log forum.

If the area you found the gyms in is a rather expansive area of woods though, you will very likely find more :smile:. Gym patches don't usually grow super close to each other, but if they've spored in those woods they can potentially be on many more fallen/dead trees.

Watch out for Pholiota and Galerina though!

I hear you there! And the place I found these gyms was actually rather funny... it was on one stump of very few, in a park, only a couple feet from the trail. I've looked elsewhere in the park and haven't found any more, and I doubt I will (there at least). The next place I have in mind is the mountains, after winter! I live in the Central Valley of California, by the way, if that helps. I know I've seen threads showing plenty of allenii and cyans from canid and Ran-D from around here, never any gyms, so I pioneered a find here in the Valley. No (decent) pics though.

I searched all over the site for outdoor gym grows and there are some people who have colonized logs in their yard. Pretty interesting! I doubt my methods will yield any good results, but it's possible. I'll keep an eye out for patches and keep the Shroomery posted in the Hunting forum. :smirk:

::UPDATE::

So I went outside to check on my home log, and have noticed that my moist patch of woodchips and sawdust is covered in whitish fungus! I'm not sure if it's just mold, or mycelia proper, but the fact that this has taken a few weeks to develop kind of makes me think that the log is being colonized. I would post pics if I could, but you know how well that works out with my shitty cam! Anyways, I'll keep the Shroomery posted on this thread about how my unconventional grow is going. :smile:

Do you mind explaining your process or showing some pics? I would love to see them. I received a print from someone and would like to try my hand at it but am a pretty inexperienced cultivator.I haven't even messed with agar yet so I am sure I am getting ahead of myself, but hey the pressure cooker has arrived so I might as well give it a go.
