Hunting In the Woods. Help?
    #19095702 - 11/06/13 02:36 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing in the woods at the base of a tree stump.

Gills:
Rusty orange, to a yellowing red color. Appear to be close - subdistant.

Stem:
a good inch - 4 inches in length, looks to be a white yellow, but due to drying out (in my opinion) its a dark red- blackish color. Not sure if it was every lighter in color, just an opinion.

Cap:
Rusty red to a brownish color, looks scaly but feels fairly smooth. Convex shaped.

Bruising: No apparent bruising, but the stem is a very dark color, almost blackish. Appears to be dried out so cannot make it out correctly.

Where in the world are you? I think this could be Gymnopilus purparatus

They aren't Gymnopilus purparatus, because they don't grow in the US. Can you take a spore print?

Maybe a Laccaria. I don't think it's active.

See the difference a well lit, focused picture can make? I was somewhat dubious about Armillaria until you posted this one. Lol.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
