Dry Pasteurization
    #19095570 - 11/06/13 02:07 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I have a friend who I am helping out. I got him to the point of fully colonized spawn bags ready to fruit. I did all the sterilization and G2G transfers and the myc looked really nice.

I was going to help him with pasteurization too but got busy and told him to wait 2 days when I had a day off. I printed him off some pages to read to get accustomed to what we were going to do.

Well of course buddy has no patience and went ahead and did a dry pasteurization with no research and spawned 8 tubs...

He was super proud that he made this revolutionary tek without letting me know beforehand. he foil wrapped coir bricks and heated them in the oven for 3 hrs at 150-160. He jammed a digi themometer (MY DIGI!) into the brick to confirm the centre was at 150.

He then told me he sterilized verm in water (no idea exactly how) and used the water to hydrate the oven cooked bricks.

I told him he was an idiot and pulled up some threads related to dry pasteurization.

What are the chances of seeing a flush?

should I kick said friend in the nuts?

Dry pasteurization is not recommended.  Fungal spores are quite heat resistant until they're hydrated.

There's a half-decent chance it might work out. I used to pasteurize in the oven for just a little bit. So that factor, IME, gives you like a 70-75% shot of it working out, but your water content will almost definitely be low.

The water/verm sterilization thing, well I can't say anything about that. I have no idea what that even means, really.

Chances of seeing a flush I'd say are 50/50 at best.

Definitely kick said friend in the nuts. And maybe make him pay for the supplies, too.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.

Being as its just coir and vermiculite, you may see a flush. Don't count on it, but it would not be a miracle.
