Planning for Peru 1

So a friend and I have officially decided to start saving our money to go on a backpacking adventure about a year from now. We plan to start in Peru and stay for about a week and take part in an ayahuasca ceremony. (I know most people would say that is typical but it's something I've always wanted to do in the jungle with a group of people with a nice ceremony) After our ceremony we will decided where we want to head next. Not sure if we will go around Europe or come back to the states. I'm thinking that we are really into the idea of going around other countries though.
Thins I am concerned about are all the laws in different countries. Currency problems, the whole passports deal and all the little details that go into planning something like this. We have never done anything like this before so we could use all the help we can get.
I was thinking of saving about $5,000 for the trip. Think that should be enough?
We have been talking and we really want to have cool experiences and stories to tell instead of being stuck in a dead end job just working to survive. This is something I have been dreaming about for years on end and I finally feel I am at a point in life where it could actually become a reality.
Anybody have experience doing anything like this?
Any tips or suggestions that would be help along the way?
What are some necessities that are essential to aid us along the way?
We are really set on the idea of finding somewhere we really like and hopefully settling down in that place and finding a job there. Is this an unlikely idea to have? We understand that it might not work out but it's something we have really been considering.

Sounds like an awesome plan. Can't really comment on the money but if I were you I would definitely check out Peru for a bit longer than a week. When I was there we went to the jungle for a week and then went to the Andes and did Machu Picchu which was incredible. Also Lake Titicaca is pretty awesome too. It's the biggest lake in South American and is also the highest navigable lake in the world. Peru is pretty awesome. Really wanna go back there some day.

Be wary of scammers. I've heard there are "ayahuasqueros" who will take your money and give you a BS brew. Also beware of thieves. Keep a close eye on your stuff. In terms of money I don't know how expensive it is down there. If I were planning a trip this big I'd try to spend a bit longer than one week, though.
