Every day, 22 veterans take their own lives.

That's a suicide every 65 minutes. What should be done with useless mentally ill veterans? Besides all the veterans benefits and GI bill stuff they steal from American taxpayers they also use up too much of the food stamps and welfare that is needed for the poor. Perhaps the veterans could be held in labor camps to provide services useful to decent society until their self liquidation. Or maybe we could resurrect the tactic of the human wave attack. Veterans could be prophylacticly treated by sending them on suicidal human wave attacks before they return home and become a drain on society. Any other ideas on how to protect society from the hordes of mentally ill parasitic veterans among us? Or maybe we could just stop having wars. Hmm.

One of my best friends did when he was only 24. I blame the military for pumping up his ego and pride. He never even saw battle, but he came back different none the less.

8,000 suicides a year by veterans? Source please.
Annual suicides in the US number around four times that amount, so your claim is that roughly a quarter of the annual US suicide victims are folks who used to serve in the US military. Interestingly enough, about 26% of the US population (roughly one in four) used to serve in the military. Veterans, in other words.
Hmmmmm…… one in four suicides is a veteran. One in four Americans is a veteran. Three out of four suicides are non-veterans. Three out of four Americans are non-veterans. That's pretty eery. There's almost like… like… some kind of bizarre pattern there! If only I could put my finger on it…..

This claim would only work if surviving vets from Korea, Vietnam, the first Gulf War, and all the other smaller military operations were committing suicide at the same rate as veterans from Iraq #2, Afghanistan, and the drone war. I don't have numbers to back this up, but I would guess that isn't the case.

Assuming your number is accurate, so what? One in four Americans is a veteran. One in four suicides is a veteran. The suicide rate for veterans is the same as the suicide rate for Americans as a whole. Why does this non-startling fact deserve a thread?

I think it is pretty obvious what I'm getting at.
How many of these people were deployed? How many served active combat? Once you whittle down the veterans to these criteria, I'm guessing you'll find a much higher suicide rate in troops than the general populace.

A deal is a deal. If I was a veteran I wouldn't have anything to do with the VA and get my own health care like I do now.

Please find a source. Even if what you say is true, that would mean that veterans from previous wars commit suicide less than the general population. Doesn't make sense to me.
I would think that veterans would be more likely to commit external violence such as physical/sexual assault and homicide, as they have greater exposure to such things while serving.
This article is a bit disturbing.
@OP I think most of your suggestions are rather harsh, though you may be just speaking satirically. Discontinuing military actions abroad would be the most desirable solution to prevent the situation from furthering, but damn, that would be a lot of psychologically damaged veterans to suddenly return to American society The most humane action we can take other than pacifism is in depth psychoanalysis of all veterans, along with extensive treatment for their psychological issues.

Most people who join the military are people with very little going for them. It's no surprise that many would off themselves.

It's true. You can decry its political incorrectness, but the fact is that people with options don't generally choose the military out of high school.
