various cacti queries
    #19093665 - 11/06/13 01:31 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I need answers to some basic cactus care questions which I still don't know the answer to after years of growing:

First of all why do cacti go a mushy texture?

Is it possible/desirable to graft Loph's when they are mushy?

Should I wait until they harden up before grafting? If so how do I catalyze this process?

When Trich's go a light green does this mean they are under fertelized? What makes them go a dark, healthier looking green?

What should Trich's and Loph's be fertelized with, and how often?

What is the best container for germinating seeds?

1 - What species are we talking about, and what exactly is "mushy"? Lophophora go soft when dry, like a half deflated ball. Mushy I would say is the moment you realize your cactus is dead;

2 - See 1. The key to a successful graft is a healthy scion and a growing stock;

3 - See 1 and 2;

4 - New growth in Trichocereus (and most cacti, for that matter) is usually lighter and brighter than seasoned tissue. Low light, low fertilizer and sun scorch can cause lighter tissue as well. Time makes them go dark and "healthier" (debatable...) looking. Examine your growing conditions, they are the key to the answers you search;

5 - It depends on too many things. What are you growing them for? In what substrate? In what climate? Lophophora and Trichocereus have VERY different growth rates, hence different fertilizer requirements. I grow plants for their looks and fertilize very weakly with a low nitrogen fertilizer;

6 - I use 5x5x5cm plastic pots. Anything from TetraPak containers to disposable plastic beverage containers to exquisitely manufactured ceramic pots will do, the container is probably the least important component (as long as it is clean, durable and doesn't leach harmful chemicals).

You can even let nature take its course (won't work with all species, though...):
