Oops! -- "Killer Ecstasy" Study Retracted

Oops! -- "Killer Ecstasy" Study Retracted, NIDA Credibility on the Line, RAVE Act Still Law 9/12/03

Last September, a team of Johns Hopkins University researchers led by Dr. George Ricaurte announced dramatic, frightening findings about the effects of the popular dance culture drug ecstasy (MDMA) on the human brain: "One Night's Ecstasy Use Can Cause Brain Damage," read a typical newspaper headline based on his study. The research results, which suggested that a single recreational dose of ecstasy could lead to brain damage and Parkinson's disease, were widely trumpeted by the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and helped create the panicked atmosphere in which the repressive RAVE Act became law.

The whole story.

Email this story to your congressmen and senators, along with (yet another) appeal to revoke the Rave Act. Do it. Now. I'm not kidding.

I found the whole report to be extremely shakey in the first place to be honest. I think I remember reading that they were basing the study on doses that were injected into the brain. I've never met anyone who injected MDMA at all.

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

too bad no one has called the myrad of ecstacy tests on the fact that they use disproportianate doses on animal subjects, and also keep them strung out for days or weeks at a time.

1000mg of MDMA every day for a week... yeah, that will cause some brain damage. But I fail to see how giving a monkey that is 1/3 the size of a human being 10x the normal street dosage for a week proves that kids who use 100mg of E on the weekends will sustain significant long term damage...

Zactly.  THIS is what our "War on Drugs" is based on.  Of course, I'm preaching to the choir here, but still

I just emailed both of my senators as well as my house rep regarding this article.

You can find the email addresses of each of your reps at www.congress.org.  Have fun!

If you are doing studies on the "dangers of illegal drug use" with the government's $$, you have almost an obligation to chuck the scientific method out the window.

They decide the "results" first and work backwards :frown:

I read that they were using meth instead of E.

A 300mg dose of pure meth vs. 300mg of pure E.

Our laws are wack.

If you want big dollars for your research make sure you conclude taking ecstasy turns you into a baboon.

all this crap reminds me of that MTV special on E, when they showed that chick and her brain was "full of holes"

People often get so worked up over this that they overlook the facts :

a. This chick was popping E like Vitamin C, we're talking 3 or more pillz a day for a period of several months
b. She was snorting coke, meth and God knows what else
c. The damage wasn't permanant. The spontaneous regenerative properties of the brain and its overall plasticity can counteract the damage of neurotoxicity as long as the drugs that cause the damage in the first place aren't constantly abused for a long period of time.
d. The "holes" in that girl's brain were not literally empty regions of space, they were simply areas in her brain that were no longer sensitive to electrical stimulation due to burned out receptors... which can be repaired over time, with clean living and supplements.

But, people either arent told or choose to ignore this data and I have to here all this BS about "Didn't you see the HOLES in that chick's brain, man..." from people who dont know jack shit about neuroscience...

grrrr... sorry, I just had to vent that.

There's something really not right about about all this...

Firstly, he's blaming the suppliers of the drugs for the mix-up. You can be damned sure that any NIDA sponsored test is going to use extremely reliable chemical suppliers who have VERY strict quality controls, and the substance would have been purity tested. I really find it hard to believe that such a mix-up could be their fault. This stuff hasn't come from some guy in a home lab somewhere, it's come from a major chem supplier

Secondly, not only is there no previous evidence of MDMA causing this parkinsons like symptoms, there is also no evidence of amphetamine causing them either, and there have been a lot more studies on amphetamines than MDMA. Infact Amphetamines may HELP parkinsons symptoms. I hate to say it, but I think there's a possibility that a substance such as MPTP was added to the amphetamine. It all seems a bit too convenient that he was looking for symptoms that previous studies had shown don't exist, and he found them. Why was he even looking for them in the first place.

Thirdly, apparently the mix-up was discovered due to failiure to replicate the results, yet after he had failed in this he still openly defended the study in the scientific press and did not mention this.

And finally, assuming that everything is above board and there are reasonable explanations for the above, there is a hell of a lot of this stuff unaccounted for. He used 1.5g in these experiments, yet he bought 10g. How many other studies has he performed with amphetamine beliving it to be MDMA, and how many of his other studies now need to be retracted?

Add to this the convenient fact that this study played a major role in the RAVE act, and the whole thing stinks of an extremely high-level cover-up. What are the chances of the rave act being passed without this 'evidence'? and what are the chances of the rave act now being repealled?

Fine points all 'round. As Dr. J said, it is so much a matter of deciding what 'results' are desired and manipulating the 'data' to produce them. It is truly mind-numbing that this type of thing is allowed - nay, incouraged - to happen... surprising, no. But mind numbing nonetheless.

Again, I beg of you all to contact your senators and reps - I even went so far as to write a preconceived (duh) statement and forward it to my friends to have them forward it to their senators and reps. I'm sure it will do little good, but we have to start somewhere.

I don't even think George Ricaurte should be called a scientist...politician would be a better word. He is nothing more than a tool for NIDA that gives a bad name to credible scientists that actually want the true facts about MDMA neurotoxicity.
It's kind of ironic that the issue of MDMA neurotoxicity didn't even come up until it came up for scheduling as a controlled substance in the early 80's. Ricaurte was of the chief buffoons that conviently spearheaded this charge, with the huge lack of evidence and the relatively primative experiments conducted at the time.

Gee, it was a simple mistake after all. He merely mixed up two entirely different chemicals, saw results in these monkeys that had never been seen before, and published it like it was the word of god. I mean,it could have happened to any objective scientist, right?

In a sane world, this would have dealt a death blow to any kind of credibility this ass clown might have had. Unfortunately, this huge fuck up is being shrugged off as a tiny mistake by mainstream medicine.

Sorry for rambling, but it's astounding how  Dr. ConflictOfInterest's study was gobled up in the medical community.Surely if single doses of ecstasy could cause Parkison's,we would have an epidemic on our hands. Considering that I've heard just about every bullshit claim in the world that ecstasy can do this and that by recreational users themselves, and I've never heard of the claim that ecstasy causes Parkison's like symptoms by users themselves should say something.

There is no way that Dr. LyingSackOfShit didn't know his study was a crock.
