couple of questions agar to grain

when you transfer mycelium from agar to grain are you supposed to cut the agar out too? in the video it didn't look like it but bad quality.
And I transfered a bunch if mycelium from a contaminated plate so it isn't in a circle but in a bunch of circular patterns, is that normal??
Also, when putting grain(spawn) to manure how many wbs jars should I use?
My container is about a foot tall a foot wide on two sides and two feet long on the other two.
How much manure should I use for a container like this and what is the ratio of spawn to bulk substrate?

Idk about the first one.
Yes, if you have multiple points of growth they're all going to grow out.
The next three questions can be answered with the...

Yeah you should be cutting a wedge and transferring it. Agar included. Don't try to scrape the myc off the agar.
You can pour qts of water in your tub and count how many it takes to get to your desired sub depth.
I like to use a 1:2 spawn to sub ratio but Anything between 1:1 and 1:4 should work fine

ok well the calculator says I need 33 quarts of sub and 11 of spawn.
This can't be right. -Can someone just telll me how many quart jars I have to fill up compared with spawn for a two foot long, one foot high tub?
-I have seen two wbs teks, one says to fill the quart jars 5/8 and one says a little less than half. which one has higher success rates?
-Also, How big of a wedge do i cut per grain jar?

how deep do you want your sub? I believe ~3inches is normal.
So you have two ways to go about this. find the measurements and put them in to the SUBSTRATE CALCULATOR.
Make sure to set the "Desired Substrate Depth:" to what you want, probably ~3-4inches.
Or fill up quart jars about how full you fill them with your rye or wbs or whatever you use, with water, and see how many quarts of water it takes to fill the tub to the desired depth, and thats how many quarts of substrate/spawn mix you'll need.
so lets say you need 15 quarts, with a 1-2 spawn ratio you'll need 5 quarts of spawn and 10 quarts of bulk substrate
...and 5/8ths the way full should be fine.
there ya go!

If you've made it through the seventh grade, you can figure out your substrate situation without a "substrate calculator."
I'm gonna teach you how to fish, instead of giving you a fish. That way, next time you're hungry, you can fish for yourself instead of asking.
Take the area of your container, which is the Length and Width. Then, take your substrate depth - abbreviated H for height - as the third variable in your volume equation. (L, W, and H) Multiply the Length, Width and Height together to find the volume of total substrate. (subsrate + spawn) Figure out your spawn ratio, anywhere between 1:1 and 1:4 like previously mentioned (I like between 1:2-3). Prepare appropriately measured substrate. Prepare appropriately measured spawn, as well. (Measurements and ratios don't have to be exactly 1:2 or 1:3, just a tip.) Mix, and wait.
Boom.

This is a nice, simple example. Just figure out how much dry volume a quart holds, and that will help you figure out how many quarts you'll need to pasteurize your substrate. I prefer to use spawn bags at this point. It's so much easier to prepare larger quantities of substrate, quarts get to be a bit of a pain, IMO.

The only thing you forgot, Midnight, is that one quart is 57.75 cubic inches.

I just fill qt jar with water and.pour it in the tub im using and count the number of jars needed ti make the water level the same as my substrate depth. Works great for measuring how much you can fit in the tub/bag/ random containter. Now i just have to figured out how much this wbs im.using really does expand. I swear it more than doubles in size.

I've found that a half of a qt of wbs usually ends up about 3/4 qt by the time its fully hydrated

See that used to be me my experince, but i got a different brand now. Take my.latest batch.
I measured out 12 dry qts. I remove 3 qts of sunflowers and floaters, leaving 9 qts to soak After soak it has expanded back to just over 11 qts, then up to 18 after boil/simmer After drying and loading into 3 bags, 6 qts each, they are PC for 4 hrs. Once cooled and removed they measure 8.5 quarts in each bag for a total of 25.5 quarts of wbs. Well over double what I started with. Just doesnt make sense. Oh well at least i have lots of spawn now. Lol.

I've had similar experiences with the Wal-Mart brand WBS. Filled a bunch of jars just to the halfway line, PCed, and then facepalmed at the completely full jars that came out.

I agree with Stromrider... Damn!
I used to double, almost triple my WBS volume from dry to fully prepped. It took me a little while to realize I was over-cooking it and too many seeds were blown.
Now, I usually fill a quart full of dry WBS, and end up with two inoculant-ready quarts 3/4 full.
