Unofficial NE Ohio finds
    #19091223 - 11/05/13 05:13 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

1. Thought Pluteus salinicus but observed no bruising so far. So i think its a P. cervinus

2. Pholiota on a living tree. Didnt want to get close for the pic but I did walk up and take a quick look. Its a Pholiota best to my knowledge.

3. Armillaria

4. Gallerina

5. Dunno why this is blue flagged?

6. I dunno it had white gills I dint have the heart to pick it.

Bonus pics

Lol. The spirit is out there. Yeah im no expert but Ive seen the white oysters like what you have sorta, and Ive seen the grey ones that happen in the fall. Theres this hill i find loads of Hypholoma fasculare not sure on spelling. They grow from soil mostly. Yours are at the base of a tree. I found some similar not long ago and They werent oysters. I forget what they were. I could be wrong bud:shrug:

The gills are not decurrent, so it's not an oyster. Hypsizygus maybe?

if the end of civilization comes, at least we know we can survive november on squirrel and brick cap stew.  I haven't tried to narrow down the Hygrocybe yet.  I left it hanging on a twig fork to give its lil spores some extra lift, seeing how i uprooted it unintentionally, i felt it was the least i could do.

then i found more of these Psantherella that constituted my first post on here and a solitary Russella

and that was about it!  no more Galerina at least

oh, i did grab a couple more conks.

Looks like you're still finding more than i am.
whatever  happened to your log?

sweet!  i'd be skeered to scratch the paint tho.  i'll stick with my ol taco 4x4 with the deer dents n stuff.  lol

i'm surprised you didnt get out at all tho, had some rain n mild temps... that said, there's not much going on in the woods these days.  its very quiet with the majority of the birds gone.  I did see a few blewits and more H. sublaterium.  I'm still chopping crap away from a few maples getting ready for syrup season.  I plan to tap a bunch more trees this year   for you, half price syrup, but your friends pay retail hehe

Right on! You get into some neat stuff. I didnt know all that. Fresh maple syrup does sound good. Might have to take you up on that offer teehee:murray:
Yeah there aint sheet goin on these days. I imagine I would still find stuff if I went out. Im just kinda bummed the last time I found a bunch of dried mushrooms mostly. I had a good first season! Still not over  once the leaves have finished falling I will be able to see longer distances and focus on riding slow through the woods on the honda. I got all excited for a minute thinking about money but Its going on the back burner really. I have things to get done in the yard and inside the house. I have a million projects not meeting completion lol. Thats just the bipolar lifestyle. Rarely sleep, eat, feel, act, decide, or think consistently. Im proud to have such enthusiasm and talent, but it comes with a price. Kind of like selling your soul to the devil so to speak. Im the kind of guy who can get you talking about something and I will change the topic right then after lol. My thoughts often race. Im surprised they let me drive a vehicle still lol! I ride my atv more then anything. I carry a heavy wooden stick everywhere I go that has cooter blood on it. Im like a space aged caveman lmao!:llamastare:

against my better instincts, but in the interest of science and the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, i just have to ask: what in creation is a cooter?  Why is it's blood on your stick?  Why do you carry a bloody (and not in the British sense)stick hunting mushrooms, is there something more deadly than Galerina i should be concerned with?

i also put the t back someone left out in nature

Im scarier than Galerina lol. The syick is for protection against anything. Ypud be suprised all you can do with one. A cooter is a snapping turtle. I eat them, i cant own a gun so I carry the baddest hardened club. Makes folks nervous but ay least its not a gun right? Or a bow wuich I can own and am good with

you ever actually SEE a moose up close?  i had the fortunate experience once when i was a teen fishing out of a canoe in the UP michigan.  It was early early and i was fishing for pike, just a lil mist on the water... i was just outside the reeds fishing a channel between some little islands and i saw the weirdest thing!  it looked like a turtle being pursued by a snake (i was thinking watermoccasin) so i paddled closer to get a better look... and suddenly the "turtle" emerged from the water and kept emerging and EMERGING.  i nearly peed myself, it was a moose swimming the channel.  the 'snake' was one point on an antler just breaking the surface as it swam.  I laid over backwards in the canoe and tried not to breath (as i'd heard alot from gramps how moose are ornery and charge a lot) but i could have reached out and touched that sucker as he sloshed by he was so close (seriously, he was like two feet away by the time he got to me and passed, he rocked the canoe.)  it was the largest thing (besides a zoo) i'd ever seen in my life, soooo cool.  so almost needed change of pants.

i realize this isn't mushroom hunting related but its my only moose story

about the stick things for hunting mushrooms... i guess i'm blissfully unaware of all the dangers i must skirt daily.  My (guns-R-us) neighbor tells me he never goes in HIS woods without packing his massive pistol because "coyotes" might get him.  Seriously.  My woods are right next door.  I've seen sign and hear them all the time at dusk but have yet to *see* one, and i'm outside 99% more than he is.

They must be stalking me pretty stealthily.  I trust my ability to a) run away a la Monty Python, b) climb trees c) talk my way out of 2 legged coyote problems, d) & want my hands free when I walk.

So if you hear a news story about a NEO man eaten by coyote, you can assume it was me since i'm woefully unprepared.

Lol! ruralAnomaly!!! The moose story is great, the coyote story too!! I hear them here but never see them either. I got a neighbor who also fears them and takes a gun into the woods with him. I told him in ten years Ive yet to see one while out in the woods. Get a stick buddy! Just in case

Im actually glad this thread finally hit the second page marker! I posted way too many pics on the first one! I see why TIs and others say only post a couple at a time. Then I was told by a member to post them all in one:shrug: one person said must post thumbnails because otherwise its confusing to have to scroll thru all those full sized images. This board reminds me of my parents lol. Except the fact they're both deceased. One says yes u can do it and the other says no. So u just ask the second starting off with...they said its ok if its ok with u. Then we learned to leave that last bit out lol!

bad xsketch! bad!
don't make me roll the newspaper.
p.s. you can always edit some of them out.

and on that note, to keep our gracious and omnipotent overlords happy with the verbose NEO folks (i like the way that last bit rhymed,) i will update on the un id-ed one in my last photos, it has a black sporeprint and will  likely be Psanthyrella

also, sorry to hear about the parents.

i have one i need to sell before it rusts completely out from sitting. can only drive one at a time. its fun to drive but i'm glad i am in the truck when i nail those damn deer that are thick as flies up here.

I know what you mean and thanx for the luck. I used to drive it everywhere. Now it sits and I start it once in a while and drive it around the block. Everything still works! Its got a better frame than my 2005 ford thats fer sure! What kind of truck u thinking of ridding?

lol ok, you got a point there, i forgot about southern spiders.  that IS like the only thing that really creeps me out, not the spider itself so much, i think they're cool, i'm always amazed at how wide the spans on the webs between trees can be but getting the web all over my face, especially when a bit sweaty, is just the pits, and THEN i wonder where the damn spider is, whether its in my hair, down my collar or whatnot.  and snakes... i did a lot of hiking in supposed rattlesnake areas in PA and KY but luckily only ever saw one single snake, and it was a lil one trying to get warm on a rock in the spring.
and gators! yeesh. therefore art, i'm convinced, you can keep YOUR stick... when i used to think it was a lot of fun to carry a 50lb pack and sleep on hard dirt, i always had a staff too.

A few days ago, I got lost in a new spot for almost six hours! Luckily enough, I went out early, so I found my way back before dark.... I almost wanna get lost in the woods once. I think I just watch survivorman too much lol ...and sketch! That conk looks like a traditional tattoo  really cool!

What do you do when it gets that cold?? Just stay inside? Or is their stuff to do in the snow? I've always wanted to snowboard... I used to be badass on a skateboard and decent on a surf board (couldn't really learn to well tho...little tiny waves in south Fla, unless a storm was coming in...but then I was fishing lol) I just don't know how well my sissy, warm Fla blooded self will do in snow lol...and I'm not really an inside person...all my life I took up activities that got me outside

How's it going up there, boys? Gettin chilly? I know the fungal life has to be slowing down. Sketch isn't posting near as much as he was during the summer.

well Marcus, it could be worse, and apparently it will soon be worse.  not as bad as Alberta by any means, but they're sending some air our way this week.  Already had snow on the ground for a day or two.
We had a mild warm-up but nothing to get excited about.

Does anyone know if any studies have been done correlating ground temps to fungi fruiting?  That would be interesting (to me at least.)

here are a few pics of late

Possibly Polyporus alveolaris?  its a leathery polyphore

the ubiquitous galerina still showing some effort

a cool cottage-cheesey looking thing.  If anyone knows the name it would save me some hours of looking... not that I don't learn a few things doing so, but sometimes its nice to be led down the path of knowledge instead of lurching around...

the Hypholoma is still popping up with some vigor in places where it warmed up above 50

a cool tree on a local trail new to me.  I'm always amazed that they are still alive up above (not pictured)  Sycamore i assumed.

and the latest addition to the family:

Her name is Mrs. Cuddlesworth (kids involved in naming obviously) and at 3 mo. has her basics down pretty well already (sit, stay, heel, come, drop-it, and shake) but I'm training her to whistles and claps so I won't have to yell "CUDDLES!!" in public - i would anyway cuz that carries in the woods alot better
she's crazy, seems to like to work to please, great focus for so young, agile and smart, gonna be a good lil' mutt (so don't guess the breed lol)

I've had 100lb+ dogs for the last 15 yrs so it will be fun to have something a bit more compact around too.

Hey X, what ever happened to that kitten?  You still have it?
nice work on the conks.  I like how the eagle is coming along.

I stay warm as much as possible but theres some things you just have to do even tho its cold out. Hobbies, movies tv you know keep busy i doors. U will like playing in the snow I bet. Just gets old real quick if you lived here all your life. Spring summer fall its rocking. Winter its kinda boring :frown:

I moved south-ish after H.S. - enough to get out of the 5mo. winter up here and when I moved back, for some family obligations - it really sucked for awhile til I made some adjustments. And while I envy those with extended fall seasons and early springs I have two words for both you boys.
LONG UNDERWEAR!

lol it makes all the difference for me between feeling like I have to shiver as soon as I step out and a bracing walk in the woods. Add a light scarf to keep the wind/snow off your neck and you're good to go.  Now, as far as things to DO... that is a mixed bag.  I used to ski alot but the knee ain't quite up to that these days so I make some maple syrup.  Its a good reason to be in the woods.

One of the neat things about deep winter is just how quiet it is compared to the rest of the time.  Silent, except a few jay calls and limbs creaking in the wind.
Sometimes I stop just to appreciate that non-ness.

January is about the worst mentally with the darkness and the cold.  By then I'm psyched to see a thaw at least to get rid of the dirty snow. (GO, Global Warming GO?)  But Ohio still has it mild comparatively, at worst we get a blizzard for a day or two (and no earthquakes,  no mountains/chaparal burning wildly, no hurricanes, nor avalanches.)  Tornado, ok, occasionally in warm weather.

I lived in Montreal for awhile and had to ask (noobishly) "why are your stop signs all 10' tall?"  by the time things started to melt it was pretty obvious...  after snow removal they would have disappeared a long while back otherwise. Now I'm older and wimpier and I don't think you could get me to embrace winter enough to move much farther north (unless its PNW.)  I remind myself "it could be a LOT worse", that helps.

If you've ever done winter camping, it can be just awesome if well prepared. NO BUGS!!! WHOO HOO! (mosquitos just luv me, and ticks too apparently) oh and usually no (other)PEOPLE either lol.

art, do your skeeters ever truly die off?

Skeeters?? Lol, I'm guessing you're talking about mosquitos??  If so, holy hell, no! Where I was in south Fla, the glades where a ten min drive down the road....well 25 mins with traffic. They LOOOVE me too...I've got a few horror stories about jumping out of the car to fish in the middle of the glades and having to chase down my buddy in the car because of the hundreds of thousands of mosquitoes trying to cover my arms and legs and neck.... they do die down for a little each year, I guess.... I was usually fishing saltwater before the temps go below 70° so I'm not really 100% sure. The more I read and think about the northern states...I just don't think I could handle the winters unfortunately

ok, spiders, snakes, gators, AND mosquitos?  i'd have to wear one of those bee helmets and a wet suit or they'd find a moldy RA husk.  wasn't there a very corny sci-fi (channel?) movie about giant killer mosquitoes sucking people dry of blood?
Tolkien had alot of killr spidrs

but the Death of Mosquitoes every year is almost a religious event for me and largely the only good thing i can say about the cold
i fear i'd have to use DEET as a bodywash, but just like the weather here, i guess you get used to most things if you really have to.

I bet Alan gets a few bites.

from mosquitoes that is.  and from the literati, maybe.

Lol, JRR would feel right at home down there then  honestly, I've never had a problem with snakes or gators (aside from them attacking fish on the end of my line!) Their was one spot on the edge of the glades where you couldn't put a bucket of shiners in the water without pulling up a water snake next time you go for some live bait...and the gators like to try and get a cheap meal when you hook a fish lol...sharks would be the thing that worries me the most...the vast majority of shark attacks happen in 4ft or less of water. And bulls (which are the sharks that are most aggressive towards humans) can go straight from the ocean to the freshwater canals! And most of the waterways down there are connected, so they can move from place to place rather easily....

Nice finds man!
