misting unplanted cacti

Some of the cacti I have laying around loose are starting to look a little thin. How often can and should I mist them? Also when you are trying to root a cactus, I was told you should not water the soil other than when you are planting them.... Should they be misted?
Ive had lots of bad luck with cacti! Sometimes my bad luck makes me question my intelligence, because I seem to have a LOT of trouble keeping cacti alive!!!

Probably. But they look so sad and dehydrated that it's almost hard to tell them apart from a Cereus.

Should they be planted? I just seem to have more luck not planting them then when I do plant them!!! But the main reason is because they were going to be ingested soon

I see no reason to plant them if you're going to be ingesting them soon. Leaving them unpotted will help dry them out faster for preparation, unless you planned on boiling them down and ingesting that way.

well thats the thing, they were supposed to be ingested, but thing came up... and now honestly, Im afraid to plant them! I just cant seem to get the environment good enough for them to live a long and healthy life. Rewind to 7 years ago... I aquired 3-4 healthy cacti. I ended up over watering them. so all but one died. After that I learned not to over water.... but now I must be under-watering them ha! But yea, Ive had so many problems growing cacti!! between over-watering, sun burn, my monster cat, under-watering, not enough light... It's really difficult for me to give them that middle ground!
A couple years ago I moved and the porch was the perfect place for cacti. I have since been trying to keep my babies alive! Last winter... I had 1 damn night of frost and it got too cold in the porch and half my cacti died THEN, this summer some of them got sun burn!!!
I dont know why this is so difficult for me
PS- are the last pictures San Pedro?

yep they do appear to be pedro, looks like pc to me
where do you live?
I've had similar problems finding the middle ground with plants/cacti but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it... lots of overwatering due to heavy soil. My backyard is mostly thick clay so with my plants I'm finding I can neglect them a lot longer then I previously thought. I had a blue torch cactus cutting sitting without roots for a couple years, maybe even three. I just lightly misted the skin from time to time and it didn't dry completely up. I potted it up this year in about 50% potting soil 50% sand and kept it in the shade mostly(during spring), after about a month I added very small amounts of water around the base, not even a full cup, and slowly acclimated to the sun; maybe just a few hours to begin with and increasing by an hour every other day or so. Now its doing well, I probably water once a week to 2 weeks depending on the temps we have. I'll probably add a half gallon water per gallon of soil now that the roots are dug in, but in the beginning I just began increasing little by little... maybe a cup of water the first month, 2 cups after and so on. Nothing really precise just incremental. Now that its starting to get cool out I've cut back the watering and probably won't water much at all/if at all throughout winter.

Strange question, but is there a way to feed them some water if they are not planted? Would spraying the bottoms with a small amount of water invoke some rooting? would spraying the bottoms help at all or is it just asking to give them rot?

light misting on the skin should put some water back into them

prob just every once in a while, when I did it I just misted lightly once or twice in a month, but I didn't have them sitting around for to long. Id say whenever they begin to look dehydrated give them a little spritz on the undamaged skin... I don't really know if I noticed them plump up because they didn't get to dehydrated when I did it... but with this opuntia pad ive had laying around for 2 or 3 years, I mist it when it looks desperately shriveled and then not long after that it began to visibly plump. I probably misted it thoroughly everyday for a week before it became plumped like that. Hard to say what is best from my standpoint since I don't have a ton of experience doing it.. may want to take it slow and easy and see what happens.

Whilst not entirely on topic, this is kind of relevant to your question, and very interesting on it's own!
