Tamiflu, or wait it out?
    #19090205 - 11/05/13 01:37 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So i managed to catch the flu from a family member over the weekend. Started feeling it
yesterday, and felt it progress significantly throughout the night. Waking up in cold
sweats, feeling as if my legs, and arms had been abused every 30 minutes. SO i ask you
shroomery, is it best to just wait a flu out, or go with something like Oseltamivir?

i usually waited it out, unless it gets serious. use disinfection wipes on everything you touch, door knobs, light switches etc., etc.. try not stay in one place for too long. drink lots of warm water, shower daily, and stay away from anything cold even if its just alittle cold. getting a bit of fresh air every now and then helps too as long as it isn't too cold.

How does that work for the viruses inside of him colonizing his tissues?

I would use Tamiflu - but it has to be used ASAP to be effective.
Sorry to hear you are unwell Legend! The flu sucks :peace:

not only does it prevent more viruses from entering, but it also helps from getting others sick.

I can get the helping others part even tho its not related to my particular question.

I don't think the first part is a particularly valid argument tho, if you were correct then extracting more viruses from your body would have had a significant impact on your improvement progress.

I haven't done the maths but I feel that the amount you excrete from your body would be insignificantly small to the total pool of actively produced viruses.

thanks guys! i haven't had the flu in years, it really does suck. I'd take this over bronchitis though.
Im just a bit hesitant to taking tamiflu, since that drug is very new to me. i hear it's helpful as
long as it hasn't been 3 days since symptom started.

So far kratom, dxm, weed, and tylenol has helped tremendously.

I don't know but speaking strictly from a chemical point of view a certain dose might have a stronger effect when the level of its viral target (i.e. neuraminidase) is lower.

I got the flu last year and after a couple of days headed to the doctor to get Tamiflu.
It worked very very fast, 36-48 hours later and I felt well enough to get on with my life(which was important cuz I got it right at the start of my spring semester).

Go get it, you might have some of that residual 'ick' feeling for a little while as with anytime you get the flu, but it'll pretty much make you feel better after the first day, even.

If you have any IV bags load yourself up.  Keeping hydrated is important.

Because staying hydrated is important no matter what the illness is.  If you actually have influenza, keeping down liquids and solids can be a lot of work.

...or...or you know, just drink plenty of fluids, eat soup...the normal thing, and you should be good.

Sometimes I do wish it was easier for me to stay hydrated and that I could walk around with an IV attached, I only drink water(and coffee/tea) but a lot of times I just flat out forget to drink as much as I should.

If you've got the flu really bad and you can't keep anything down, an IV is a lifesaver.

He can simply take something to reduce vomiting which he hasn't reported and drink a mixture of sugar and salt in water. It takes 3 sodium ions to import a single glucose molecule. If you want I could calculate exactly how many grams of salt and sugar you have to take for optimal effect.

What you suggested was more expensive and totally overkill.

We're not talking about the 1918 Spanish flu here so its largely irrelevant.

Oh yah, no arguments because I've been hospitalized for flu-like conditions(not influenza, I was in Honduras sick with a tropical flu when I was little...which is utter and complete hell, BTW) and if you've got it bad then keeping anything down is a chore..shit..I was too weak to get to the toilet to throw up myself at that point, and honestly if he had IVs laying around anyways it might be easier...but generally speaking the average case of the flu shouldn't require that sort of thing.

It might be tough to keep yourself drinking and eating(even if it's just soup) but if it's getting the the point where you need an IV to stay hydrated I would probably suggest heading to the doctor or hospital. A dose of Tamiflu set me right super quickly. I didn't have it ridiculously bad last year, but it was influenza and it was still no fun.

Hah! Very cool, never knew that! Noted, for the next time I'm seriously ill while on a very tiny island with no real medical facilities.
Thankfully, the mainland was right over yonder and my parents flew me over to get treated when things got hairy.

But dang, there's nothing like a 104 degree fever in tropical heat, humidity, and no AC. Shit sucks.

I will let it pass most of the time take it easy
my friend and other people I know got flue shots last year and they all got really sick I never had one in my life and went to hang out with them felt like a charm after don't know if it means any thing but I think that says something about flue shots the only way I will ever get one is if they strap me to a bed
