Shaggy parasol?
    #19089704 - 11/05/13 11:53 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

These are edible, right? I've been watching these for a couple of days now but they don't seem to have grown much. We had our first frost there a couple of nights ago and I'm wondering if that's stalled them. Maybe I should just go ahead and pick them?

Habitat:
Ireland. Roadside.

Gills:
Unknown

Stem:
Estimated 6 inches

Cap:
Closed. Almost spherical. Light brown, scaly. Estimated 2-3 inches diameter.

Spore print color:
Unknown

Chlorophyllum species.  A peek at it's bulb's manner would help get to ID.

It could also be Chlorophyllum brunneum.  Without a broken veil and the manner of the bulb it's hard to say.
just remembered the OP's location...you are correct most likely!

Thanks. I'm just going by what I've read on the internet here, but I understand these are edible when cooked, right? I'm also a bit concerned because according to Wikipedia Chlorophyllum molybdites have been reported in neighbouring Scotland. Maybe I should just leave these?

Let them open and check for a green spore print to rule out Chlorophyllum molybdites.

Take a spore print if you're worried.  C. molybdites like pretty warm temps and their spore print is very obviously green, it is unlikely that you'd come across them right now.  If your print is cream/white you're good to go.

I still firmly believe that's bollocks. C. molybdites doesn't grow in Europe. That was one claim from about 30 years ago, maybe it was genuine, maybe not, but I haven't seen a single report in recent years. It's simply too cold for it to thrive here. Additionally, C. molybdites is a grassland species.
I can guarantee with 100% certainty that your mushrooms are not C. molybdites, but a very good edible.

I've posted a follow-up question about cooking this in the Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms forum here if anyone could answer it, it would be much appreciated.

Even during the summer in irrigated places?

How would it survive the winters?
I suppose if people went around making outdoor Chlorophyllum molybdites patches... Luckily, no confirmed finds in Europe as of yet.

I'm not sure, it seems to do it just fine in the North American East Coast where it snows...

Maybe it does survive the winter. I don't really care about it.
Once again, what matters to me, none of those flags are in Europe.

That doesn't mean anything beyond that not enough people in Europe post on MO.

Also, it has been recorded in the Netherlands once according to FAN5.

Not enough. If there had been any sightings, they are very scattered and very few. The media if no one else would very quickly report if people had been poisoned by 'parasol mushrooms'.
People are also claiming that P. cubensis grows in Tasmania...

If Alonso said that I would at least seriously consider it, you may want to look at the author of the Chlorophyllum section in FAN5.

I know she's an expert on this group, but one claim is not enough to prove that a species is established and at least somewhat common here.

That is true. Mushroom picking is not very popular over here in Ireland, certainly not for edibles anyway, we're very fungi-phobic in general.

Also it has been an extremely unusually hot summer this year with temperatures in the 80s and low 90s for much of the summer, and we get much milder winters than many areas on that map. Perhaps maybe the weather this year could have been within range for them to thrive? But then again, how would the spores get here?

Here in the south it's extremely popular tough, and the large majority of people who don't know mushrooms are familiar and pick exclusively Macrolepiota procera, which is also a grassland species, without checking. Everyone thinks they know them, and everyone picks them. No poisoning reports yet.
But if C. molybdites ever spreads to this part of the world, a whole lot of people will get very sick and be thoroughly confused. No one has any idea that there is a poisonous lookalike in the same type of habitat.

I didn't mean it like that, there are plenty of European mushroom hunters, its just that Mushroom Observer observation maps are more about where mushrooms can occur, not where they don't occur except for some locations like parts of California for instance.
