Question about bruising
    #19083738 - 11/04/13 12:45 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

First let me just say thanks for any feedback,

I have shrooms that don't appear to have blue bruising, but a much darker bruising, almost black. Maybe it is black, or just super dark blue, but I'd almost swear it was black. Is this normal at all for Psilocybes? These mushrooms are dry, so I don't know if they were just excessively handled and thus overly bruised, or if they just bruised that way. But have you ever seen Psilocybes with dark bruising? I'll post pics tomorrow when I can take some decent ones.

Also, a side note, but the gills of this mushroom have white specks of... unknown on them. They're not part of its color or anything; I can actually brush these specs of If I wanted. Any info about that is appreciated.

Depending on the species and conditions oxidation (bruising) can be very dark.  The flakes you are seeing are probably bits of vermiculite used in cultivation. That is assuming these are purchased and not found mushrooms.  Post up some picks tomorrow and lets have a look.

Thanks for the response. These are indeed purchased mushroom, the vermiculite theory makes a lot of sense. I'll definitely have pics tomorrow.

Mold could appear as little white specks that would brush off also.

Dried mushrooms can appear dark or even black

I'm sorry for butting in on this post, but I am new here and I cannot start a new topic yet. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if these shrooms would be okay to eat? They are not 100% dry yet, but they are in a desiccant chamber right now after air drying for a few days. I'm not sure if they are rotten or what, but they are kind of soft. Any help?

Sorry for taking forever to give a response. I don't have pictures because I was really busy today, plus it was a shitty overcast day & they would have probably been bad quality photos.
Lhun was right about the vermiculite theory, too.
Thanks for the input, everyone.
Also, what a relief it is to know that my mushrooms are homegrown and not found out in the wild. ._.

Those almost look like dried Leratiomyces ceres with food dye on them.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

So... I add blue food coloring and they become active?:facepalm3:

I thought that the biggest mushroom kind of looked like cubensis.
I have never seen a cubensis though. Just pictures.

IDK Dude....to me they look like cubes that sat too long before drying. That black looks like mold. I would pitch them. Next time though, post a pic and start your own thread...some here frown on jacking threads.:sunny::peace:....the only other thing that could make that color would be if they dropped their spores before drying...still looks like mold to me though.:badshroom:
