Liberty Caps without gills....

Was just out to check a last time before season ending. I only found 10 or so and some of them were pretty mature.
So here's the questions: - Are Liberty Caps still edible once the gills are gone? - I also found a couple that were near black. How are they in terms of both edibility and potency.
Cheers..

Bumped because of changed title in hope of better response...
Just to clarify... I'm 99% certain they are Liberty Caps, but they are probably left overs after someone flushed the field, so they matured past picking point.
I had them on newspaper over the night and they are fairly dry, and by the looks of them they resemble the others I have (dry) quite a lot.
But are they a waste of space being so mature and gill less?

Libs have it's active compounds in every part of the fruit, so even if you don't have cap, stems will still make you trip.
Someone more experienced have to answer your question about degraded mushrooms, personally I pick them and use them.

The ones without gills have usually been raided by small maggots, and should thus present no problem regarding consumption.
Obviously rotten mushrooms should be avoided, in my experience - black, gooey and with a sour smell are points to check.

I advise against eating rotten mushrooms Or any food really that is rotten.... So you have to decide 1) are these liberty caps or something else (Mycena comes to mind) 2) why no gills... Rot or slugs or maggots 3) how bad do you really wanna trip
Don't think we can really decide those things for you, and hard to give advice without pictures
Peace

I agree with not eating rotten mushrooms. Also, don't eat rotten broccoli or bacon. Oh, don't smoke rotten weed either. IT'S ROTTEN!!!
That said, I have no trouble eating mushrooms that just have slug bites on them.

Take care you don't have lungworm in your area if not making tea though. Gastropods are carriers and they can cause you some serious disease.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm sure it applies to most of us. Though lungworm would seem rare in humans (I've never heard of a case first hand) it's sounds completely horrible.

Personally I wouldn't eat ones infested with maggots though. The thought of it turns my stomach!

Some research demonstrated that "lungworm" as it applies to the lungs of vertebrates only afflicts four legged critters. But there are other nematodes that use snails and slugs for one of their life cycles that can afflict humans. The eggs hide in snail and slug tracks and once ingested they hatch and head straight to the spinal column causing a form of meningitis and brain and nervous system damage. Yummy!
Lucky for us, cooking kills the eggs. Don't eat your mushrooms raw!

Most people I know eat libs fresh or dried, I've scarcely heard of people cooking them. Should we now be cooking them?

You will probably less chance for stomach upset with cooked mushrooms... Cooking breaks down cell walls a bit so not so hard to digest and also kills bacteria, like E. coli and mold that might be on them.
So .... Should you cook raw mushrooms? Sort of up to you. Typically, eatable mushroom hunters would not eat raw mushrooms... So why would psychedelic mushroom hunters?
Keep in mind, dried mushrooms are not cooked either.... Though, drying probably does kill off some pathogens...
Just some 'food' for thought

I WAS talking about edibles. Not takeables. Heat almost certainly damages the active compounds in those. But I'll bet freeze drying would kill the pathogens and it's said to preserve potency better than air drying.

I chop mine up after they have dried and stick them in orange juice. Removes the shroom taste completely.
