fruiting half colonized sub
    #19088624 - 11/05/13 04:23 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So basically everything that could go wrong did. While I was at work my cats managed to get into my grow room. They knocked the lid off and jumped inside my mono while it was still colonizing. So I decided to fruit it just for the hell of it. Later on the cats returned and ripped out the polyfill and then proceeded to my galindoi jars :frown: The sub dried out. So ive been trying to revive it with heavy misting. So far no contams, the rest of the sub continues to colonize, and im getting a decent pinset for ms. Maybe the low temperature of 65 is helping. Idk. I did get cobweb actually but got rid of that quickly.

Im sure itll contam soon but im hoping ill get a flush first

Oh and the substrate is very unlevel

Excellent pinset.  Is there any verm in there, or just coir?

If your girlfriend doesn't want you to sterilize her cats, try Damion's bucket pasteurization.

Yeah its 8qts coir, just 1qt of fine verm(all i had :/) and a 1/3 cup of spent coffee grounds... which makes it even more suprising to me that its not contaminated.

The pasteurization method on the cats might actually work haha

So the end results along with some questions;

Fruits matured too soon, some fruits deflated... could this be results of the uncolonized sub?

Also, hollow stipes.. what causes this? I heard genetics.. Is this true?

This is my second complete grow and both times ive had all three of these issues. At least the first time I had a fully colonized sub.

Hollow stipes are a characteristic of the species....cubes are usually hollow.

Lower temps will help the fruits be more dense, and less hollow, but they will all be hollow to some degree.

The fruits maturing can be genetics or moisture content related.

I fruited at 65 degrees lol. How much lower could you possibly fruit these guys?
So what about deflated fruits?

RR's note: *Benefits from fruiting at 68-72F. 1. Better Fruit Quality, 2. Easier To Control Harvest Time, 3. Easier To Control Evaporation.

*Better food quality and slower growth occurs in the high 60's low 70's, that's why it's the true preferred range.

that temp thing is awesome every time I see it.  Its getting cold up here in the Northeast and my landlord doesn't seems to turn the heater more than a quarter turn.  My dog sleeps literally wrapped around the heater.  But yea, my last tray fruited at 68 and those fuckers were DENSE!  still a bit hollow though, like nota said.  ever make a straw outta a really tall one like u used to do with twizzlers when u were a kid?  instant psychedelic tea!  (not really)

awesome dude!  that cat story is funny, Im not going to forget that.  I have a dog and mush roommate has 2 cats, so Ill be keeping my tub elevated and inaccessible after reading ur post.  What was your spawn to sub ratio?  How big was ur tub?  I just got 2 27 quart tubs to start hopefully in 5 or 6 days after my jars finish.  I got 3 Peurto rican MS qts. going for one tub and 3 qt unknown iso of a mystery strain (either Golden teacher or tasmanian, I mixed up the agar plates when transferring myc so Im not sure which one it is) for another tub.  After they finish ill do a normal size mono like in Notahacker signature.  Im following his tek  now with the smaller tubs, just scaling it down a bit to make up for less spawn.

Yeah it was pretty funny of them to challenge me like that :P
It was a 112qt tub and it was about a 1:4 spawn to sub ratio.
The best of luck to you dude

Im spawning some pan cambos to bulk today. Hopefully theyll pan out;)
