Just when he says something very odd try to press him gently to open up about it. Find out more what he means, why he said that, etc.
My friend it would be too much to type up. He gradually became more distant, extremely monotone, showing no emotion, and would always repeat the same thing in conversation.
Anyways man, I know hes your friend. Try your best to get him to open up when he seems off the best you can. Much love
That's basically what I see happening to him. He still has emotion but it changes rapidly. I've been gently trying to get him to open up, but he changes the subject or just ignores it usually

as for the kid in the OP he doesn't sound too bad, maybe he should meditate on compassion so that he doesn't always think in vulgarities.
He doesnt always think in vulgarities it was just the statement of the week i was describing.

He was a lot more social last year, he would be the one to initiate the conversation with people when at the library, on campus etc. Now, like I said, it's damn hard to hold a conversation with the kid.
He does have family, they staged a drug intervention a few weeks ago after he went home for the long weekend. They noticed he was very off too. Threatened him with drug tests and the whole nine yards.
Im in contact with his father but I don't want to blow the alarm on it before i'm positive he needs it. Besides, im with him pretty much all the time, i think it'll be a lot easier for me to figure out what hes going through than it would be his parents if they start freaking out, out of concern.

Sounds sketchy, I would keep a close eye on him and make sure he doesnt start to self-harm (overdosing on drugs, drinking, physically hurting himself)
It is in the realm of posibitlity that your friend is entering a psychotic episode. At the least he will need to confront some demons, at the worst he could need to be hospitalized and given pharmaceutical medication... anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers, etc
I went through all the symptoms you are described in your description of him - staring off into space, random laughter, and more.
He needs his family and friends right now, it's a good thing his family is trying to reach him. And you as well - you will be needed in his recovery. It's important that he gets a lot of attention and care.
I went through a psychotic episode, hospitalized, the whole deal. PM me if you need.

I know my OP doesnt make the best case for him being schizo but it's a whole lot more than I could fit into one post, theres different things every day.
He does casually reference hearing voices, he interprets them as other peoples thoughts though.
Yesterday he sat in the living room while me and my other rooommate were on our laptops, Breathing heavily for about two hours staring at a blank tv screen or into his hands. Like extremely heavy breathing. I tried asking if he was ok but he kept insisting he was.
Earlier that night he was like " in class today I was just sitting in the corner of the class and laughing.. the students and even the teacher would look at me and i just stared at them until they looked away" He said it was in all his classes..
