Toddlers fed with cannabis-laced pasta sauce
    #1908726 - 09/12/03 07:23 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

September 12, 2003 - 5:55PM

Two people faced court today, charged with feeding two young girls spaghetti with a sauce laced with marijuana. The girls, aged two and four, were taken to hospital after their parents returned to a friend's house to find their children drowsy and, in the case of the older child, almost comatose, a court was told today.

The man and the woman, who had been looking after the children, today appeared in Adelaide's Elizabeth Magistrates Court, each charged with two counts of supplying a prohibited substance.

Anthony John Patten, 22, and Karen Lee-Anne Anderson, 33, were granted bail at $1,200 each on condition they had no contact with any children under the age of 16, including Anderson's four children, aged between nine and 15.

Police prosecutor Harry Scherwitzel told the court the two children had visited Patten and Anderson's Elizabeth Park home yesterday morning with their parents.

The girls' father allegedly smoked a quantity of cannabis with Patten and Anderson before leaving with the girls' mother and another six-month old sibling.

Mr Scherwitzel said Patten told police he later served the girls lunch, giving them spaghetti with a pasta sauce containing cannabis.

Patten claimed he had simply forgotten what was in the sauce, the court was also told.

However Mr Scherwitzel said what had happened was "perhaps a parent's worse nightmare".

"(The parents returned) and found their two children drowsy, sleepy and in a very unhealthy state," he said.

"The four-year-old child ... who weighs about 12kg, was assessed as being in a state where she was near unconscious and almost in a life-threatening coma.

"In fact the doctor from child protection (services) said two small bites of the food would have been enough to put the four-year-old in the state she was in."

Mr Scherwitzel said the children had started to become more alert and active today and were expected to be released from the Women's and Children's Hospital within 24 hours.

Mark Kernick, for Patten, said his client was distressed by the incident.

"His intention was not to feed these children what they were fed, that was an accident," Mr Kernick said.

"This isn't a case of wilful child abuse, it was a case of forgetfulness of what it was (in the pasta sauce) that he was providing."

Anderson, who sobbed during the court hearing, allegedly told police soon after the incident the children were ill when they arrived at her home.

However Anderson's lawyer, Sally Burgess, said her client, who cared for a number of children in her neighbourhood, had cooperated with police.

The court heard Anderson did not currently have custody of her own children, but saw them during school holidays.

Patten and Anderson will reappear in court on October 22.

I bet that was a tasty pasta....

One of the reasons marijuana is illegal today because growers in the 30s lobbied against hemp farmers -- they saw it as competition, because It is not chemically addictive as is nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine.

See if marijuana was legal, every kid in America would be eating cannabis laced spagetti and going in to comas.

Don't get me wrong children should not be given marijuana, but I highly doubt they were anything close to a "life-threatening coma".

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

I must admit, this article caught my eye in SMH with its sensationalist header(which is why I posted it), but what a careless mistake to make when minding children.

At least it wasn't like some of the accidental drug injestions of children in recent times in Australia, such as MDMA & amphetamine pill swallowing...Cannabis at least won't cause any permanent harm.

What never hits the papers is the endless poisoning of children from what's under the domestic kitchen/laundy sink in "drug-free" households. Of course, that won't sell a newspaper.
