Is rapid cell growth or rapid cell division responsible for the boggling speed that fruits grow
    #19087205 - 11/04/13 08:10 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I think it is amazing how fast the fruits grow, often it seems they can double in size in a 12-24 hr period. Is it that the fungal cells are rapidly dividing to account for this growth, or are the cell numbers remaining similar and increasing in size at a fast rate?

I think their rapid increase in size has more to do with water uptake than cell division but I'm not completely sure. I think I remember hearing that  I've slept since then

I believe i heard the same. The pin generally keeps the same amount of cells up til it starts sporulating. The cells just grow mostly from water expansion. I believe, but im no expert.

Both, but at what percentage I'm not sure.
This is the reason to clone from a pin vs a mature fruit as the cells are in rapid division mode.
