Improve my Kratom Setup!
    #19080927 - 11/03/13 03:32 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I purchased a small 1-2" kratom cutting six and a half weeks ago, and he's been growing like crazy until this last week. I originally kept him in a fish tank terrarium, then moved him to a rack in an indoor portable greenhouse stocked with trays of perlite. Last week I accidentally topped him when removing him to water him, causing a completely new burst of growth as he attempted to bush out. This would have been great until his soil became too moist and molded, forcing me to repot him. He had completely filled up his six inch pot in the space of 4 weeks, and I moved him up into a very large container in a closet with a humidifier and 600W HPS system. All but about three large leaves fell, although more are growing back now.

Now the issue is: I have no ventilation because I wasn't planning on using the light or closet for anything anytime soon. If I vent the closet the moisture drops and so do the leaves. If I don't vent it reaches around 107 degrees in there during the daytime, which I don't feel is very safe at all. I have two 62 Watt 6500 K cfl to use in a setup, but I lack the electrical know how to even turn them on:tongue: Any help or input be much appreciated (Long time lurker first time poster), and of course, some pictures for your time:

Will follow up with more photos, of my kratom, tobacco (seedling in the setup photo), morning glories (In there as well), and whatever else I get my hands on!

CFL:

Feeling pretty stupid! The lights have no ballast, but I have no idea how to go about getting the correct one

I just started growing kratom a few months ago as well. I'm no expert, but I think you have spider mites. It looks there is a piece of web visible in the first picture and the leaves seem to have a yellowish discoloration that I think indicates mites. I'm fighting off some mites right now :frown:.

With regards to your question, yes 107 degrees is too hot for kratom from what I have read (and for safety reasons as you stated). I am using a 400w hps system right now and am investing in a cool tube for overheating reasons/burning plants. You should look into getting a cool tube because it will bring down your temps a good amount.

As far as the cfls go, I would leave you kratom under the hps. Kratom loves a lot of light. Also, I think CFL's are self ballasting, so I'm not sure I fully understand the problem.

I'm fairly certain I don't have spider mites because I've been using an organic canola oil solution due to what I believe was fungus gnats. I discontinued use about a week ago when I transplanted, but will continue again at night during the cool period just in case. I think the web in the first picture was actually a bit of carpet fuzz .
The yellow discoloration of the leaves began on all new growth once it was moved into the hot closet. Previously all emerging leaves and veins had been almost completely red when they emerged, then the leaves turned green once they grew out, then the veins turned green; I think the yellowing is from inadequate conditions. My morning glories support this.

I'll definitely look into a cool tube! Thanks for the suggestion! And my cfls are "unballasted" :frown: damn. I think they'd make kickass seed starters. Goodluck fighting off the mites, they're evil! On a mostly unrelated note here are my nicotiana rustica seedlings:

Stunted one that spent a week in the sauna:

Larger one that remained in greenhouse:

I'm happy to see another indoor kratom grower here. Good luck with your plants . Keep us posted.

Edit: I just picked up some nicotina rustica seeds as well. I haven't done much research, but I was just going to use them to fill the empty space in my grow room. My understanding is they get pretty large. How do you plan on managing that? Thanks.

I have sent clones to people growing kratom where it is rather hard to grow outside. good to know people will do whatever it takes to grow ethnobotanicals.

Thanks, I'll definitely keep the pictures coming! I plan on keeping them small enough for my closet by topping them as much as needed. It isn't an ideal plan at all for harvest or appearance but I wanted to gain a little experience with the plant before the growing season rolls around, so these are my little test subjects ! Hopefully I'll get a nice taste of the smoke and its needs. Once it comes a bit closer to spring I'll start some seedlings indoors, then transfer them to an outdoor plot.

Pretty top-heavy

Lost one of his two remaining old leaves last night, but none of the new ones have fallen so I'm not too concerned.

Just the first of many ethnos (hopefully)! Have Calea Z. germinating, Wormwood, and will set up for San Pedros soon (already have seeds). Got something like 70 grams of wild morning glory seeds from my backyard as well.

Yeah I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to do once they start getting big. Maybe I should wait until summer...

Good luck with the Calea z. I'm ordering more seeds now. I surprisingly had quite a few germinate, but they all shriveled and died when I put them in soil. I think this may have been due to a change in humidity/ lack of humidity dome, but I'm not sure.

Goodluck on the new batch. You could always try to start them in soil; My seeds came with directions to germinate in 1/3 soil, 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 humus (underneath a humidity dome). I think I see root structures forming, but I'm not sure as they're so small.
I installed a small computer fan to exchange air in the closet; The temperature drops faster and rises slower without a huge drop in humidity. It isn't ideal, but is better until I can find the money for a more efficient setup. The temperature dropping outside should also help :tongue2:.

My two Rusticas have taken off over the last few days, I might dedicate a thread entirely to them once they get bigger, and I have more content.

Edit 11-13-13: Abandoning thread; Setup is manageable. Will definitely get a cool tube before spring. Temperatures are hardly ever getting over 100Deg F. Got a 360 Watt bulb that can be used with my ballast, and as a plus I can place my light MUCH closer as well (within twelve inches). Computer fan exhaust, lower watt lightbulb, and freezing outside temperatures have saved the plants! Thanks a bunch.
