Help: ash pasteurisation, wood substrate, Reishi
    #19085420 - 11/04/13 01:30 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi all.

I have two quarts of very healthy Reishi. The grains colonised to 100% in three days! I had never seen this before.

Anyway... Can I spawn them to a mix of wood chips, straw, peanut husk, gypsum?

I do not have sawdust and do not know where to get it from.

However I have unlimited access to wood ash from biodynamic farmers and would like to start using it to pasteurise substrates.

Can I use wood ash to pasteurise a mix of the above ingredients and will it work with Reishi? This would make life a lot easier. I have never pasteurised wood substrates before and apart from this method I'd have to use a pillow case in my PC which will not suit my aim to make the farm more efficient for no extra cost

Any help appreciated. I also have Calocybe Indica (3 quarts), king oyster, shiitake, another oyster...I even have a shiitake straw basket pasteurised with hydrated lime that is nearly fully colonised

I really hope someone can provide a solid answer to my question, I'm probably not the only one wondering about this.

Cheers

My reishi grain masters colonize in three days, usually.  2 petris to 200ml water, blended, then poured into 4 six pound rye bags.

Now if only shiitake and beech were so fast!

I have tried pasteurizing woodchips and straw together using hydrated lime but it was unsuccessful. Lots of green mold grew after a few days.

I think it is hard to pasteurize woodchips like this because they have so many cracks and crevices that the lime doesnt always fill in completely coupled with the fact that fungus can be living deep inside the wood and be unaffected unless thoroughly saturated with alkaline water.

Ok thanks for the hints.

Maybe saw dust and straw could work since there won't be any cracks?

I will have to try this week end.

Unfortunately I can only get my hands on pine wood chips which I am not sure work with shiitake/reishi/oysters.

Or do they?

We grew some reishi on pine, colonized fine. It did not fruit until 2 weeks after the oak and the fruit was small. If I remember correctly though Ganoderma tsugae will grow on conifers.
