quick trich question * 1
    #19082830 - 11/03/13 09:43 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So today I went to dunk some jars that were ready (100% colonized plus a week to consolidate), and one of them must've gotten some moisture in the top layer because upon opening it I found a tiny patch of green mold :mad2:

It didn't seem to be touching the mushroom mycelium at all, and I cut off a layer on that side of the cake, being careful not to disturb the mold spores. Can I still birth this cake into my FC? It doesn't look contaminated, although I'm not sure what trich mycelium looks like (there's around a hundred species of Trichoderma, apparently). If it ended up being contaminated, wouldn't the rest of my cakes in the FC be ok for a few flushes since the mycelium is still strong and can fight/prevent any trich spores from germinating and spreading? Thanks

Fruit it in a separate container, keep an eye on it, and away from your clean cakes, if you feel you need to keep it. Just remember, trich isn't something you want to mess around with anywhere near your grows.

if you've noticed trich in one of your jars i would toss it and not even mess with it, usually trich eats its way from the inside out and its looks bright white and fluffy like a marshmellow, and if it turns green its already released tons of spores

I don't know about the eating from the inside out thing, but yeah if it's turned green then it's too late. The green mold known as trichoderma does have a cottony look before sporulation. Anyone who hasn't seen trich likely won't be able to identify it, but once you see it a couple times it's pretty easy to spot.

My last grain jars looked completely healthy until I cracked open the lid, and noticed a light green mold (like almost lime green) on the top of the healthy mushroom myc near the FAE holes in my jars. Interesting. What I did was changed my jar lid poly-fill, pressure cooked all the empty jars+lids and started over; back to near 100% success since. I've come to the conclusion that it's in my best interest to change my poly-fill every couple of batches, and also if a jar happens to contaminate.

I wouldn't touch the jar to be honest, I would dump it. To think about the possibility of the mold spreading to your grow area just makes it not worth it IMO.. try to salvage one cake or likely ruin every other cake with it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to fruit it by itself, away from the other cakes and my normal grow area. I didn't roll it in verm at all so that if the trich spores do present themselves, I can notice it right away and dump it outside.

If trich is present, it's only a matter of time before sporulation.

At the end of the day I know you'll do what you want, but I'm saying it's in your best interest to not mess with that thing at all. As in don't even open the infected jar, but it's obviously too late for that.

chuck it out! not worth messing with!  You cannot remove or cut trich off the block.  it is growing white myc in the block that you cannot see and it will overrun the block in time.  chuck it out!

Yeah, as I was thinking about it later I decided it wasn't worth it and chucked the cake outside, along with a couple jars I inoculated with apparently contaminated LC (which was expected). Thanks everyone
