I think there is a much deeper...

I think there is a much deeper reason as to why alcohol and Rx drugs are legal and pretty much everything else is illegal or will be illegal soon.  but maybe its not that deep and dark, maybe it really is all about money.  I cant quite put my finger on it, its like one of those things you think about on a trip and suddenly it all makes perfect sense, then in the morning when you wake up it makes no sense.  i dont know for sure but it feels like there is something deeper.

It's all about money (and subsequently about keeping the populace nice and passive). I have felt that way as long as I can remember.

true, i agree.  it's all about controlling the general population, and that probably ties directly to the money.  I guess all the other sinister motives are the paranoia and conspriracy thoughts coming through.

Marijuana is the elephant in the room regardless of ones stance on drugs in general.

That's what the people want or else they would change it. There's most likely no deeper conspiracy than that.

What makes you think that?
Despite the US government's persistence on quickly outlawing every up-and-coming drug like some ridiculous prohibitionary whack-a-mole,
I do believe public opinion on this matter is quickly shifting.

I doubt there is any super intelligent elite controlling our lives. There is this business elite and they're probably pretty selfish but as for anything grander than that you're probably just suffering from a psychosis.

Have you seen how stupid most people are? That's why our society gets held back, especially on things taboo like things that explore the mind, consciousness and afterlife or truth of reality type questions. Most people are still religious remember, Christian or Muslim etc.

Enjoy what we have, it's pretty good. Continue to explore psychedelics on your own. Don't expect society to get a grip any time soon.

We are still stuck in lower states of consciousness en mass as reflected by the drugs we have legalized vs the ones we dont.

We can take the pragmatic approach to begin with;

Where shrooms are relatively easy to come by and the mere fact that they are enlightening and personally evolving for an individual, there's no real monetary incentive to make them legal.
Money is a form of shackle that keeps everyone from the upper middle class and all the way to the bottom in check.
And since enlightenment amongst the entire bottom population would create severe discontent with the extremely uneven ways of society as a whole, they fear mushrooms.

At the same time alcohol has the complete opposite effect. It's dousing... it keeps you mellow, and giggly content with the appalling state of things. At the same time alcohol gives you that short illusion of being free and carefree, but still in a illusory way.
So the shortcomings of alcohold seen from an elitist point of view is acceptable. It's ok that people become violent and hit their wives, kids or each other... does hit and runs or rob banks / liquor stores / what ever. As long as you remain dormant to the fact that you are actually not free but a slave of culture and a confined belief system.

That's also why the psychosis and schizophrenia myths are so prevalant. Even though there haven't been any real research done in the area of psychedelics since the 60s we keep recycling the bad information that is out there, that if you do this... you'll go mad! People just keep forgetting adding that yes, 1 out of 10.000 are so build up genetically that they unfortunately will go psychotic once their brain chemistry gets messed with.

But how many people go mad or out of control simply by drinking easily available alchohol? It's a lot.... A LOT!

But having said that, while I believe that there was a time when the active use of alcohol as a population suppressant was discussed, I think alchohol now unfortunately sits so deeply rooted in us that they don't even have to force it upon us.
Culture has taught us that if you want to have fun and be a part of the fun crowd, then you have to consume at least one glass of poison to keep up.
We have bought into the notion of being illusory free by choice and since we are too dumbed down by tv and media in general we can't find our way back out to live our lives as what this game really is at the base of it all... a planet of walking talking apes of different skin colors, and a game that lasts around 70 years.

Imagine this:

- You have been invited to play the most interesting game you could ever enjoy. However there's a limit to playing it to 2 hours.... would you go into that game completely blind and hammered to ignorance, or would you release your mind, open your senses and enjoy it as open minded as "humanly" possible?

1700
The Dutch export shipments of Indian opium to China and the islands of Southeast Asia; the Dutch introduce the practice of smoking opium in a tobacco pipe to the Chinese.
1729
Chinese emperor, Yung Cheng, issues an edict prohibiting the smoking of opium and its domestic sale, except under license for use as medicine.
1750
The British East India Company assumes control of Bengal and Bihar, opium-growing districts of India. British shipping dominates the opium trade out of Calcutta to China....

It follows from all that.

There isn't any deep and dark reason - people are scared of things they do not know about. Drugs other than alcohol are scary to the majority of people. It's that simple. Even many of those that smoke weed are the majority of times scared of other "harder" drugs and think they should be illegal.

What's your point?  The masses are scared because they've been led to believe so.  That is pretty dark IMO.

if not for  Yung Cheng, back in 1729 (nearly 300 years ago) there would never have been prohibition anywhere except maybe nuclear arms and WMD.
