I have zero hobbies. Recommend me some please.
    #19083899 - 11/04/13 01:37 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I get so embarassed when people ask what I do for fun. The real answer is that I just stay home and watch tv and surf the internet on my free time and nothing else. But I'm too ashamed to say it so I dodge the question in a really pathetically obvious way.

This is getting very depressing. I don't have many friends and I want to meet more people but I don't know where to start.

So I want to start working on my social skills. And I'm going to have to develop interests in more things than solitary stuff.

What are some hobbies where I could naturally and easily form new connections with new people? I'm thinking of joining an mma gym. I'm really bad at anything physical but I want to learn how to fight. What else is there?

Something that I can regularly attend 3+ times a week and see the same old faces. Something with young people and cool social guys and pretty girls. Something that's socially acceptable and expected for people in that hobby to hang out outside of that hobby and become friends.

Any ideas?

Where would you look for clubs or classes for those things that you listed?

Reading is not a hobby. It's a necessity.

Well at least for soldering and experiments, and probably woodworking you could look up a hackerspace in your area. With that keyword I suggest you hit up google if you like making things.

Well, my personal hobbies are weight lifting, cooking, trying out new restaurants, shooting guns, water-skiing, jet-skiing, sailing, and archery. The last five are pretty expensive hobbies and therefore not something I do very often.

Something that is very simple and enjoyable and affordable for everybody is becoming a foodie. Learn about wine and become familiar with cuisine from all over the world, and you can easily join a foodie group that tries out a bunch of new and hip restaurants around town. When you have become acquainted with them, you can save money by hosting potluck parties at your house and serving your best dish to them. One thing to remember, is that people always bond quickly and easily over wine and food.

And although I'm generalizing, people who are foodies will tend to be a lot nicer, more pleasant, less confrontational, and more intellectual than people who take up MMA. I don't know what kind of personality you have though, maybe you would fit in more with the macho-man types who take up Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Alternatively, if you are into tobacco, you can join a cigar club.

If you are a more athletic person, join a rock-climbing or kayaking or snowboarding club. If you live by an ocean or lake you could do group snorkeling for relatively cheap. All you need to buy is a snorkel and maybe a wetsuit if you like. And money for boat rides for trips further out, which shouldn't cost that much if you're in a group. I recently went group snorkeling by boat, and ended up swimming side by side with a pack of sea lions! That was a very memorable trip.

If your set on learning how to fight hit up the gym for 5 or 6 months beforehand, or youll literally get destroyed in sparring and grappling matches. The gyms a great place to meet people though and the atmosphere at any good dojo is really close and tight knit. Online video games sound like theyre right up your ally though, even though its "not real life" you can srill meet a lot of good friends through it, even if you never see eachother outside of it. Pubs are lifes chatrooms, great place to meet people, especially if your lone wolfing it.

Most instructors make sure that their pupils are trained properly before they introduce them to sparring. That includes conditioning.
