QUESTION. I have never seen more than one episode of the original FMA. Am I ok to start with Brotherhood or is watching the original necessary?

Original is not necessary. FMA: B is a lot more epic IMO.
From what I recall, I believe brotherhood is more true to the MANGA while the original just did their own thing at a certain point.
The only problem with brotherhood is, they didnt DUB the last season!

The first one while it's not bad it just doesn't go anywhere and there isn't much to keep you watching besides trying to figure out whats going on, it's not that it's bad it's just not the same way the manga was told so it doesn't really have like a story throughout the whole thing thatalways follows up with another episode.
Even if you like brotherhood I would say you could probably skip it, brotherhoood is way better and I'm so happy I took a chance on it
I assumed he had netflix or even regular hulu, so I would say watch Fullmetal:brotherhood
I have the blu ray at my house for a reason.

that's what I've heard, the only thing keeping me from watching Brotherhood is I was told that it skims over certain parts faster than the original anime.
But I also generally like stuff that follows the manga, as that IS the original story.

like brotherhood makes you like the characters and story that much more, it was only crazy to see how much things changed from those two series in the way they showed the story

ok cool, guess I'll boot up Brotherhood on Netflix!
I need a breather from Berserk manga, it's emotionally draining.

Man you're the first person I've ever heard of not liking Champloo. It's not heavy on plot, more of an episodic series. I'm usually all about plot but with Champloo it doesn't even matter...the drawing, animation style, action sequences, anachronistic (and awesome) soundtrack,,,everything just comes together into a beautiful work of art. IMO of course.
Oh, and Jin is the ultimate badass.
Nujabes (the dude who did all or almost all of the soundtrack) is one of my favorite music artists now, after being introduced to his music through Champloo.
