Snowboarding vs Skiing
    #19083627 - 11/04/13 12:20 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I prefer snowboarding because where I live there aren't any mountains, so I spend a lot of time in the terrain park. It seems with ski's the park is kind of useless. Well not really useless, but your so much more limited than on a snowboard.

What do you guys think??
Snowboard or ski
You may choose only one

I grew up skiing. switched to snowboarding.

Grew up in alaska so both are passions of mine. Snowboarding I love I can bust 540's.

Skiing I would love to get back into because I was pretty good as a kid. Since you land forward I think I could go bigger considering landing sideways can be counter intuitive at times.

I find snowboarding WAY more fun.  On skis unless you're flying down the hill it just isn't fun.  On a board you can butter, float around, pop little 1's and 3's and it just feels a lot more fun.

I grew up skiing from 3-12 then switched to snowboarding and never looked back.

Yeah most of my friends that started out on ski's and switched never went back. I've never tried skiing but since I'll be working for my local ski/snowboard lodge I think I'll try renting some ski's and give it a shot

Skiing is ridiculously easy.  You just point and go.  There's no effort required at all to go down the hill.

snowboarding is more difficult, looks cooler, and is more fun.

I have done both for years

Same here. Exactly.

Yet I would bust 1's and 3's off little kickers all day on my skiis as a kid. I want to get another pair because after gettin good at boarding (way harder learning curve imo) I think I could bust some fat ass shit on skiis.

Snowboarding is harder than skiing at first, however skiing is more difficult to get really good at. Good skiiers are bad ass in the park and back country. I started snowboarding at 12 and never went back

Skiing in the park isn't useless, just wayyyy fucking harder. Every now and again you see some pro shredding it up on the skiis though.

As for me, i've been skiing since I was 3. Lately my parents have had some health issues, and being in college i don't get spring break with my younger sister, so i've taken up snowboarding by myself/with an instructor and lovvvvve it. I won't say i like one more than the other though. I'm much more confident on skiis, but i think the challenge of learning snowboarding is what excites me. I was getting to the point on skiis where the only way to be challenged was to get in moguls, which i hate. On a snowboard, blues are finally hard again

Lol that is a highly simplistic statement. Perhaps if you're bombing greens or confident bombing blues, but there is far more challenge to skiing than bombing moderate terrain...

Of course, but IMO skiing isn't fun unless you are going fast or you have an amazing/difficult mountain to ski on.  I can have way more fun on a shitty hill on a board than on skis.  If I go out west to Kicking Horse or something though I can have fun on either.

Bombing it down a steep hill in a straight line - skiing
Anything else - snowboarding

Okay i gotcha. Snowboards are definitely more versatile when it comes to terrain. Much more to do in the way of tricks and all that. At least for the average joe

You have that backwards.  Skiing sucks UNLESS you're on a black diamond, and a hard one at that.

I prefer snowboarding since I don't even really know how to ski, but I think people who say skis are limited just think of skis as "go down hill" type things. There's no reason you can't do fun shit on skis like you can on a snowboard, just like there's no reason snowboarders can't hit backcountry terrain.

Obviously they have their differences. I've always felt that it was easier to learn to ski than board, but more challenging to go beyond just getting down the hill.

Of course you can do other things, it's just less fun on skis.  Buttering on skis is a joke compared to on a board.

Fuck skiing.

Snowboarding is cool cause you can boardslides and lipslides and switch frontside 360s and 270 lipslide and shit. With skis all you achieve is to look like a gay pussy homo faggot.

Riding switch on a board is a joke compared to skis. And buttering on a board isn't exactly my idea of fun or challenging in the first place. It's like, the most basic thing once you know how to get down the hill.

Obviously it's personal preference, I just never understood why so many people think doing tricks on boards is fun and on skis it's lame. I honestly think a lot of it has to do with the "coolness" aspect that used to exist. I know that's why I started boarding as a kid instead of skiing. There's just some weird notion that boards are for tricks and skis are just for going downhill when that's just not true. It's like beginner level mentality. Plus if you're at the level where just going down a hill is easy or lame then you're really missing out. Personally I've never been much of a terrain park guy at all anyway.

Edit: I worded that last bit like I'm some kind of expert or something when I'm far from it. It just seems that a lot of people who go casually and not that often think "Okay cool, skis can go down the hill, but that's boring, I want to do tricks" or something along those lines. Going down the hill isn't boring unless you're on a boring hill, and skis can hit the park.

IMO riding switch on a board is much more difficult than riding backwards on skis.

I ride pretty much exclusively in the park, but again, unless you're at a hill with a sick park or amazing and difficult runs you have to make your own fun, and IMO there's not much to be had on skis.

I dunno, I just don't see how one is so much more fun than the either. I never understood it and I never will.

I found riding switch on a board fairly easy, though now that I think of it for the very brief time I tried skateboarding I rode regular but on a snowboard I ride goofy, so perhaps that had something to do with it.

On another note, when it comes to people who are going for the first time I typically recommend skiing; especially if they won't be going many more times in their life. It's just way fucking easier to learn. I know there are plenty of people that pick up boarding pretty quick, but in general it seems to take people longer and be a far more frustrating experience. A nice payoff once you learn, but if you're not going to be investing that time it just seems like a potential waste.

I've grown up skiing since I was 3 years old. I tried to snowboard at age seven but i never really liked it as much as skiing. The whole put on your binding at the top of the mountain thing really got on my nerves. I enjoyed the fact that skiing was so efficient, you have poles incase you get stuck and your skis will fall off if you get in a bad crash so you dont tear your knee. I respect skiers and snowboarder equally. Its their choice what they enjoy more not mine! OP i tottaly disagree on the point you made about how snowboarders have more freedom in the park. skiers have the same if not more freedom in the park. Name one thing you can do on a snowboard that you cant do on skis. You have 2 separate feet on skis which allows you to do much more than a snowboarder can. You can do many more grabs and on rails you can use your front ski edge to do pretzels and other variations. Heres a video of me skiing.

I ski'd once and snowboarded for a good 7 years straight. To be honest at this point cross country skiing sounds the most appealing to me right now.

It's got to be a personal thing then. I've been skiing all my life and can't ride backwards. Can't on roller blades or anything either. I started off riding switch on a snowboard. Plus riding backwards on skiis is a pretty limited view of what skiis can do. For the average person a snowboard is more versatile, but a true badass can shred the terrain parks on skiis better than most snowboarders can

You didn't start off riding switch, you started off goofy. So switch for you would be regular. It's not like skiing where there is a default forward. What your switch is depends on what you ride normally.

I know what goofy is... I've been wakeboarding since 5th grade. Yes I started off riding switch. When we would do our runs i would make sure to alternate stances each time. Admittedly after a few days i started focusing only on goofy for the sake of progressing faster, but i didn't find it necessarily hard to ride regular as long as i did some practice runs

Okay I see what you're saying. When you say you "started off" riding switch it just sounds like you, well, STARTED OFF doing it, which obviously doesn't make sense.

According to this logic I've done switch flip to nosegrind and switch hardflip to bs5050.

Damn I'm good :highfive:

I ride goofy on my skate and I've done these tricks. But if riding goofy means you ride switch then I've done them switch which makes me a boss :fonz:

Yeah, he's saying he rides goofy but was able to ride switch pretty easily from the get-go.

I mean, he worded it poorly but he clarified what he meant.

I got the job at my local ski/snowoard place (can't call it a mountain) But I'm now a lift operator, so I'm pretty happy about that, get a free season pass and shit. Now I just can't wait for this snow to hit goddammit

I tried to snowboard once, but the board was the wrong height to lean on at the bottom of the hill and didn't match my goggles so all the other kids told me to give it up.
So thats the trick? You sit on your ass til it goes numb so it doesn't hurt when you fall?

I dunno but I got a warning for posting this picture. And in fact I posted it entirely because of the hot sluts in it, I just couldn't find one without a lame joke. But all the raped people in here started bitching and had it removed

How anti-conformist. "I'm trying to get banned, brah."

The only thing you are accomplishing so far is coming across as extremely stupid in regards to the topic at hand.

Step up your game and get banned already.

What does this have to do with conformism? I'm just spending too much time here and I don't really have that kind of time for bullshit.

Also being on the shroomery in the first place is sort of anti-conformist.

I grew up skiing from about 4-8, but switched to a board since I skateboarded.
15 years later I'm bringing the skis back cause I want to get into back country stuff.

IMO,
Boarding is Better for deep powder on the resort, or shitty conditions in the park.
Skiing makes a mountain more accessible though, and for really steep/gnarly shit, I'd rather have two edges down than one.

That said I'm keeping both

Fair enough, just leave that bullshit attitude out there when you come out here to the real mountains.

Seriously though some of my best friends are boarders, and i used to board, i just prefer skiing because its more versatile and better for charging the steep and deep

If i moved to the flatlands there is no way i could ever charge these 195 cm, 120 waist rockered bad boys ever again and would probably bust out my old board.

Oh and to the guy who said you can’t butter on skis.

Here is a nose butter tripple cork 1620  so fucking crazy.

Then they have night skiing which is basically the groomers litten up.

All about the pow though so I'd just go during the afternoon.

I do both. I am way better at skiing than boarding because ive been doing it my whole life.

Snowboarding is tons of fun when you go off course or when there is tons of powder.

Its kinda of a bitch tho the fact that you constantly re strap when you get on the lifts, or when you loose speed and have to push with your foot loose.

Skiing is fun when you start to get skilled at it, it took me alot longer to learn how to ski good where as i learned how to board pretty good in two days. maybe cause i skateboarded at the time?

falling on skies is a bitch tho ahhaha

idk they both have there pros and cons.

Yeah one really good thing about snowboarding over skiing is when you crash you don't have to walk 30 feet uphill to get a ski, you just hop up and keep going. Although it can be a bitch at lifts and such when you're going across a decent amount of flat ground

All though I liked what you said about boarding. Your take on skiing is incredibly wrong. I've done and seen even more insane shit done on skiis.

Allthough butter backside 3,s off a small ledge to another butter on a board is :datass:

the whole feud between skiing and boarding i have really only noticed with people on the east coast. a lot of people do both and skiers/boarders ride together all the time in colorado (maybe not aspen but that should be considered its on state, or an extension of cali maybe)

these are awesome for back country riding...

You got a good point there, but they both have big downsides.

If you crash hard enough on a board being locked to the board sucks ass cause you can fuck up you knee or smack yourself with the board.

smacking yourself with a ski sucks too, and losing a ski and staying on the other ski while you are bombing a gnarly hill is about the worst thing ever

This guy has got it. We all joke around about it and shit but i roll with a bunch of skiers and boarders.

The east coast produces mad talent, after all our lord and savior steezus christ, tommy walnuts is from Maryland or some shit lol. The difference is they  hone their rail skills in their little icy shit holes and come out west to learn how to actually ride and never look back. We really are spoiled by the snow and the terrain.
