Am I mentally prepared? 1

I've done a decent amount of research on psychedelics, mainly LSD and Psilocybin mushrooms. Psychedelics sound like something I'd like to try, but I've heard many people saying how you need to be mentally prepared and such for it. I smoke weed daily and have done so for about a year now, drink occasionally, but don't have any experience with any other substances. The main reason I want to try psychedelics is because I've heard it can allow you to look deep inside your mind/subconscious and allow you to be very introspective, which is the reason I'd take a psychedelic; I want to explore my mind, see what's going on in there, maybe learn a few things about myself, that kind of thing.
I'm mostly worried about having a bad trip I suppose. I've heard a lot about set and setting and already have that sort of thing planned out, I can trip in my room with a friend (who may or may not be tripping as well), where I'll have access to everything I'd need during the trip; food, entertainment, water, ect ect. I have a history with clinical depression that I'm still not really quite over completely, I'm sort of hoping that I can use the trip as kind of a tool for figuring out what's going on in my subconscious and thus perhaps help with my depression.
I know that one should go with the flow so to speak and allow the trip to happen, not go against it or try to change its direction, and I'll have a trusted friend there in case things get too uncomfortable. I'm just not really sure if I'm mentally prepared, psychedelics sound pretty intense. Thoughts? Comments? Criticisms? Anything would be appreciated.

About the only thing that I find prepares me mentally for a trip is doing regular meditation and/or spending quiet time alone in nature.
Do you have a way of leaving said room without arousing anyone's suspicions while you are laughing your ass off and not making very much sense about anything?
It's hard to recommend a psychedelic. I find that I have much easier experiences with LSD compared to mushrooms usually. The thing that sucks is that a large percentage of the "LSD" that is circulating these days is actually other RCs that people market as LSD. Some people enjoy them too, but I like to know what I'm taking.

You sound as bout as ready as you could be for the first time and your entering the experience with right mindstate. In my own case psychedelics have helped my depression immensely, I hope they can do the same for you.
I have never had a real "bad trip", I guess I just have the ability to pull myself out of unsettling places in my mind. The biggest thing you gotta remember is that no matter how powerful the experience get's, it is only temporary. I have never heard of a permatrip or psychological damage from responsible doses

My biggest piece of advice is to start with a small dose if you're feeling a little anxious about your first trip. I'd say 1.5g cubes is perfect. You'll have plenty of time to go deeper, and with all the research you've done, it sounds like this is something you're willing to try more than once if all goes well. SO, make your first trip as comfortable and fun as possible!

As my signature says, a psychedelic won't change things for you, you have to think about it in a non aggressive way when doing it. Since you said you have some depression you might want to start off with a low dose. In no way do psychedelics make you depressed, but they definitely make you think more and you don't want to dwell. You want to look at your problem as if its a maze and you are going to find the way out yourself. You want to be with somebody who is cool with the situation and doesn't try to do stupid shit like trip you out when you are on it. Mushrooms are better for a novice than acid because with acid one hit could be a lot more of a experience than you bargained for. If you are set to do mushrooms you probably want to take around a gram or so. My first time I ate 2 grams and it took me awhile to feel comfortable, although it was pretty nice at the end. You don't want to be looking for music while you are coming up so it is a good idea to turn on a full album and just relax into the experience. I find when I am at a peak after the come up it is easier to move around. Try not to let people intervene/show up to the house before you are comfortable where you are at. Psychedelics are very revealing and they may show you things about the person you are with that you hadn't seen before, this is normal. Your mind will be altered in a way it has never been before, don't see this as a bad thing. People can see it as a bad thing and it is not at all. Try to allow it to settle in because it will do you favors if you aren't struggling. Don't dwell on your problems but question why you are feeling the way that you are in life and try to think about why it is silly to feel that way. I hope I helped some. If you are going to do it don't fight the experience because it is a lot easier to be inviting to the feeling.

Just go for it. Don't think you are not ready because you never know until you try it. Keep in mind that psychedelics, preferably mushrooms, can only do so much for you. You may come out of it feeling depressed but you need to take the experience and apply it in a realistic manner. The mushroom will show you things that you may not want to see but it is all for a reason. Don't think a bad trip is actually bad, take it as a lesson and turn it into something positive. You can do all the preparing you can to try to avoid a bad trip but if the mushroom is going to show something that may be frightening you just need to go with the flow and not be scared of what you are experiencing. Psychedelics are amazing (and scary) and it is up to you whether you are going to use it in a positive way. Don't be afraid of it. I would suggest you eat shrooms if anything. It is an amazing experience and no matter what happens you will come out of it a better person, if you choose to take it that way.

Good advice here.
Yes you can't really be prepared because a psychedelic trip is not like anything else you've ever experienced (except perhaps some dreams). Mushrooms can be easy to get into but they can also kick ass like no tomorrow - and there's no good way to know beforehand. Still it's easy enough to control the dose, and since you don't know ahead of time how much effect they'll have you want to start on the shallow end of the pool before you dive in - a couple grams at most as others have said. Then wait a week or two and raise it up, realize though that they work exponentially and twice as much is much more than twice the effect.

The worrying about having a bad trip is what's gonna make you have one, stop thinking about it. Just know the effects and for how long it lasts and remember that you just took a psychedelic. You can never be fully ready for it just let it do its thing.

OP, to me you sound just about ready. As ready as one can be, for their first trip.
A little advice would be to prep your body for the trip. I suspect many bad trips come from having a body that can't handle them well, not just the mind. By that I mean a system filled with toxins from too little exercise and sleep (your lymph can't do its job properly if you don't physically move enough) or from drinking/smoking way too much.
Think of your body/mind like a tube, through which experiences pass. A trip is like a whole lot of experience coming your way. Bucketloads. Truckloads. Through a loose flexible tube with not many obstructions, they will come and go, and leave nice memories of having waved and wiggled from the wonderful warm colorful liquids that came for hours. Through a tube that's stiff, obstructed with crap, turned and coiled and knotted on itself and can't wave / move flexibly, putting in the same high amount of liquid will have to violently crack and push some things out of the way by force. So do your own cleaning and detoxing and physical preparation as well as you can, so the shroom can freely flow through you.
Including on the day of the trip, make sure you don't go from idle/sleep to tripping, waiting idly on the couch while the shroom hits. Take at least a nice walk outside first, jog or dance a bit to get some blood flowing, then come inside and go for it. You want to start with an active body and then later end up laying on the couch / floor, seeing the awesome visuals, as opposed to start in an idle state, then get hit with a ton of bricks of a brick, that your body isn't prepared for, your brain doesn't have enough oxygen for etc. So make sure you move.
Don't take heroic doses your first trip. Take 1.5 - 2 grams dry tops, see how that goes. Lemon tek will make the trip stronger and shorter, so 1.5 grams in lemon tek is IMO a good place to start. If you get any bad vibes, you have a shorter trip ahead of you. Also IMO a shorter come up is better, but that's just me.
If you have the shrooms, plan on 2 trips for any major psychological changes / improvements / insight. First trip like I said above, to get you used to tripping. Then wait for the tolerance to go down, 2 weeks or so, then you can go for the stronger trip if you feel ready. Just work your way up to it, that's the safest way.
You'll find that shrooms are fun at any dose, from a tiny micro-dose that feels like a strong coffee, to a medium dose that makes you buzzed, loose and social like alcohol but in a much better way, to the high dose that makes you go:
The high dose is awesome but IMO it's not good to start with it unless you've taken other psychedelics before. You work your way up to it, then it goes smooth. Hopefully
Prep a good playlist, have fruits and veggies and other types of natural healthy food for when you get hungry, many hours into it.

I disagree with this one. I smoked salvia for more than a year before my first experience, and it was a great great teacher. Just follow the guide and you'll be fine.

Hey, thanks for your advice. I'm interested in doing psychedelics for the same reason OP is doing it for. Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, but let's just say I'm in it for the trip to understand myself and why I feel the way I do, etc. Why I keep thinking this or that, or why I'm unable to feel anything, really.
And I like your guide on salvia... I've smoked salvia but it was literally on 5x (very weak) and I smoked it out of a pipe and a bubbler. It didn't do much for me as it made me feel dizzy and it felt like I was getting pulled one way and I sweated a whole lot. Is it supposed to make you feel physically uncomfortable?
Meh, I thought I'd be able to just "let it go", but the sweating part made me feel like something was happening to me. I know nothing in reality was happening but even with a small dose, the effect, vision or trip or whatever you'd call it, was enough to make me feel a bit uneasy.
I don't mean to hijack this topic. But one more thing I was wondering about salvia: does it have any cross-tolerance with anything? I heard it affects your mu-opioid receptors so maybe that might have to do a thing with being able to enjoy shit.
But a low dose didn't work out for me... so eh.

People go psychotic on psychs because of genetic predisposal to do so, overusing* them, and I have a theory that it also has to do with not giving your trips a break and sorting through what you came to such an emotionally powerful conclusion to. Not enjoying the current present moment is everything the psychedelic experience trys to steer you away from.
I hate to put the context that it can be dangerous because I am a responsible user myself, but It is our responsibility to spread the knowledge of responsible use and the safety profiles of psychedelics and drugs in general.
* as in having done a moderate dose every week for years or more, (which I still haven't met anyone that has).

This site has a ton of good information for the beginner http://www.shroomery.org/9054/Trippers-FAQ
Including info on avoiding bad trips
What I will say is you hear more about bad trips because people don't usually write about good ones... Bad trips are actually pretty rare... I have estimated that for every bad trip you hear about, there are at least 100 good ones you don't hear about... It's called reporting bias... See this in the news also... Report all the bad crap so it sounds like the streets are really dangerous!
My advice is to work on your Set and Setting...'listen to your inner voice', you will know when you are ready... Only you will know when you are ready.
I will add that I would also stay away from salvia, datura and other unpredictable plants... Just my 2 cents... Some folks use it of course... To each their own
Peace

The weed might be an issue if you need to use it during the trip. Psychs and weed don't mix well for some, others prefer it. I recommend against using psychs as a tool to figure out the mind, or to study it in a question and answer, left-brain dominant investigative way. They are much better suited to experiencing things, unraveling the very thought-based constructs that separate us from knowing our being. This is where you will find the issues that could be causing depression. Do it through the body, not thought. The more you sense and feel what is going on, and the less you think about it, the more you'll be in direct touch with unconscious material.
Have the opportunity to go inward, setup a comfy spot where you can rest. Constant external activities or silent darkness are extremes to be avoided.
I define a bad trip as one that is destructive. Too many people say that to mean a trip that is unpleasant, when those can be rewarding in the long run. You don't have to flee at the first sign of rough waters, you can safely ride through them with acceptance, compassion, or another attitude of your choice. The only thing we have to fear is being afraid of fear.

This.
Would totally advise against smoking weed on your first psych trip. I've seen it go wrong, ending in panic and 911 calls, after the whole acid trip went without incident before smoking weed. Combine when you know both substances well, and even then use caution. Best to err on the safe side. Plenty of time later for heroics.

Get LSD Get ehrlich reagent test to test it before using
Take 1½ hit first time or so gradually up dose to 3 hits each time you trip, leaves all fear behind due to dose
listen to psytrance: youtube.com/watch?v=lQuH2JPjOiY
take LSD instead of shrooms would be my advice, shrooms are good if you are experienced IMO LSD is always good, much love :-)
for the best trips, always listen to psytrance, take a walk in nature and dont do other drugs the day you trip, for the most pure experience
the best/deepest trips are without a sitter... lock doors, be alone, turn off phone always feel the music, tune into yourself

This. Ultra bonus points if you actually show up to a psytrance festival
I had never heard this kind of music before actually showing up to Boom 2012. Once there, I thought it was kinda weird and overly electronic but ok, I'll try anything once. Then this guy told me that if I drop acid and go hang out at the main stage, this is one type of music I'll listen to for the rest of my life. Now obviously I'm not dead yet so things might change, but so far it seems the bastard was right
I don't know if even half the effect will be the same if you're by yourself listening on headphones / speakers, as opposed to at a festival, MASSIVE sound system booming for miles and miles, obliterating everything, surrounded by amazing people who also love tripping. If you've ever seen those videos of nuclear testing, the actual nuke blast taking down trees and houses and everything, that's the feeling out there, that happens to your ego.
But yeah all this is for down the road, not really for a first trip.
Playlist-wise you want to check out some psytrance, also slower types when you need to mellow out, you can play with this site to get some ideas. http://www.ektoplazm.com/
Much of this music sounds weird on a clear head when you first hear it, but it's all trip-inspired, you really get into it while tripping. Or better said you transform into an entity that enjoys that type of sound experience. It helps you think

I used to smoke weed everyday
after psychs it stopped :-)
and I tripped once with a friend too who used to smoke everyday for years, he stopped too now
we both lost lots of weight
psychs are great... better than weed IMO, dont miss weed
weed can maybe be fun once in a while half yearly, but I always consider if that is what I want now
you dont need to mentally prepare for psychs... but being 20-25+ couldnt hurt, I was 25 first time I did LSD now Im 3 lol, but consciousness level is up a bit compared to before, feel closer to myself than in a decade
the biggest danger with taking too much LSD is you might end up loving everything you see like first time you saw it/the world, and it lasts and also see how were all possessed by our thoughts, it will take some effort to reduce that frustration
do it in right set, setting , then you can use psychs for consciousness expansion IMO trip for the love I used to trip a lot with my thoughts, but it quickly gets too deep then :-) then I learned to turn off thoughts and experience instead
have tripped both ways, both ways can be fun... tried both lsd, shrooms, salvia ... all of them are nice, I dont do other drugs than psychs since theyre perfect drugs for me, they show me the illusions of the brain often and often increase awareness/clarity next day, just like meditation/nature
