It's an island pretty far south of the Japanese mainland, about equal in latitude as the Florida Keys. Seems pretty plausible that they are cubes.

Why would there not be cubensis in southern Japan?

I'm still wondering how and if Psilocybe capitulata is different?  Is that one of the species that was synonymized recently? Where is Alan, Inski, and Joust?

Japanese publication said:
Because of its typically furfuraceous-squamulose pileus in age, the capitulate pilocystidia, and the infrequent, less-developed pleurocystidia, P. capitulata can be distinguished from the other previously known taxa of the section Cubensae such as pantropical P. cubensis (Earle) Singer (Earle 1906; Guzman 1978, 1983; Pegler 1983;Stamets 1996; Thomas et al. 2002; Cortez and Coelho 2004) and P. subcubensis Guzman from Mexico (Guzman 1978, 1983).

Lots changed since then, P. subcubensis is supposed to be the same as P. cubensis.  And if its different, that doesn't tell us which species this is, location might point to P. capitulata.

Psilocybe capitula was described as new due to the pileocystidia, however the same pileocystidia was found in the cubensis type collection.

Guys, please check the type collections of closely related species before publishing new names.

I removed P. capitula from the list of which mushrooms grow in my area a few months ago.

I'm in Kyoto right now and extremely jealous. Congratulations on the nice find.

Do you think one would be able to find some of these in Okinawa in December or January? Might be going there for a short holiday.
