And what do you consider worth? I think growing as a person can mean just as much as a salary. I agree that a certain salary would be nice to have. I would like one. But I also have learned something in school that a plumbing job might not be able to offer someone.
Why not do both?
Here, alot of my friends got degrees in anthropology, sociology, philosophy.
They often go back to the roots and learn manual labor jobs like electricity, plumbing, carpentry. This way they fullfill themselves with the knowledge they wanted and do the things that they wanted after. One doesnt need to stick to a standardized path.
However, some people dont value the intellectual knowledge as much and prefer to stay on the school benches for the fewer years possible

It makes me sad that many people do not see studying as a means of simply learning.
This thread is about whether or not university is worth it. For most people, coming out $50 000+ in debt with no clear path to a high-paying career means it's not worth it.
Sure, learning is great, but if you're poor as fuck for the rest of your life because of it the vast majority of people would consider that not worth it.
Yeah if your goal is just the learning itself then a better option might be to just buy some used textbooks and crash lectures on things you're interested in, unless you're already rich enough to shell out that kind of money on tuition without having any trouble paying it off. If you're getting everything paid for with scholarships, you also wouldn't have to worry as much about whether or not it's going to help you make more money. For everyone else, it makes sense to put some serious thought into how and when you're going to be able to pay off the debt you're generating.
Personally I went to university for a while and quit when I realized I didn't have a plan for paying off the debt and wasn't putting in enough effort to do well. Now that I'm older I'm thinking about returning. Computer science was one thing I thought about but I'm not sure how well I would do. Nursing and teaching are also things I'm considering.

That, and the experiences that college/education can bring. Meeting with brilliant minds can often provide really valuable perspective that will be with you throughout life. Not everyone will pursue that type of development in college.
You can't calculate that type of "value" in a tuition fee.

I work full time to pay for my school and live. It's all about strategy.

Plus, you can go part time if you want.
Amphibilos,
Tell your friend with an anthropology degree to look into gas companies. Jobs are booming in Pennsylvania and Ohio. You can do independent contracting or work for a company. You just have to be good is all; to find someone who will train you. These drilling companies like history and anthropology majors. Even English majors since you will be spending lots of time with documents in the courthouse.
Pretty much these companies will contract you with any degree as long as you can do the work.

In the US you only have to pay back what you can afford. This is calculated as 15% of above relative poverty rate earnings. After 25 years the balance is forgiven (10 years if you work for special non-profits) Basically, if you dont get a high paying job you dont have to pay back your loans. This is a kind of "student loan bailout" (my words) that was implemented only a few years back.

25 years is a looooong time. If you end up at $0 net worth 25 years after finishing school you're going to be working until the day you drop.

Most people work till the day they drop. But it doesnt matter what your net worth is... In the US you only have to pay off 15% of your above relative poverty earnings. You are still free to save, invest etc.

Ah, ok. Still though, that's not a good deal. I'm certainly not going to be working till the day I die unless things go horribly wrong.

I think its a great deal, great for the student at least. It mitigates the risk associated with student loans. You can still be middle class no matter how much loans you take out. It is a shittie deal for society who has to pay for it though, and I dont see it being sustainable.

It is all about specialization. If you get a BS in biology there is going to be high competition and chances are you will end up with a low paying entry job in biology or working in a completely unrelated field. If you specialize in remote sensing and GIS analysis though your odds are going to be much better for getting a good job. The thing is that community and technical colleges actually offer more options for specialization than traditional universities and they are offered at a fraction of the cost.
