Do you think college is more or less worth it now with how the economy how is?
    #19081918 - 11/03/13 06:37 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Three points of view that could be popular in society -

1) A lot of college graduates are reporting more debt now than before and not being able to find jobs that match their degrees.

2) If you go for something like engineering or computer programming you're chances of having worthwhile job prospects is pretty high if you do well in that field

3) If you're an entrepreneurial type of person that money could be better spent building a business.

That said there does seem to be a big number of people not being able to get good jobs after graduating and being left with huge debt, so in that case it seems like there might be some better options.

I think the problem is people going into college looking to get a job that was popular back in the day. But our economy has changed and we make money in different ways now, so you just have to pick a relevant degree for the times.

Its nice to put off having to work a mundane job for 4 more years if your not footing the bill. If you are then it depends what your going for. Id say if you wanted to be a scientist it would be worth it to go to college.

It depends on what you want to do with your life, but in general I think the answer is a definite yes.

BSc don't really have great job prospects either nowadays.  Engineering of computer science are by far your best bet at a high-paying career with just an undergrad.  With most other degrees you're probably looking at getting a masters.

You either need a real scholarship or a mom and pop scholarship.

Otherwise you're $20,000 down

And it ain't like it used to be

The banks are intent on making that debt fuck you for life.

If your parents are footing the bill then do the college route if you are going yourself I would put it off and work a mundane job.

I like college because of the experience, but it's a real pain in the ass because what 18 year old knows what they want to do with theirlife, so a lot of money gets wasted towards just figuring out what you want for a career.

I think the amount of debt college puts you in is rediculous and could use some refining. Also, it takes so long to get a degree meant for certain fields, by the time you get it the demand for that job could have changed completely.

It seems to me that you are assuming that every person is after the attainment of a job in order to satisfy their debt.

Some people study for the sake of knowledge. The things that can be discovered are amazing.

Secondly, even if you had to pay off debt I think it could be a worth while effort. But that depends on the person. Some people enjoy an education. They enjoy satisfying stimulational needs and enjoy to explore personal interests that are typically studied at a university. Other people enjoy different stimuli; they like working with cars or growing crops.

More importantly you forget that school doesn't have to leave you with debt. I am currently paying for my school with cash. Just don't expect to go to some fancy school. Small state schools offer quality education for cheap prices.

I personally love school. I plan to remain in school for the better part of my life; even if it's just one class here and there. I love to explore new ideas and the environment is perfect for it. Colleges are a breeding ground for ideas.

Once I get completely set up here in washington I want to go to a community college and get at least a 2 year degree under my belt. I wouldn't go to a huge school too expensive. I definitely wouldn't mind going to a community college though hell of a lot cheaper as well.

Yes, pretty much. College is very useful except for those who suck at it

Agreed I wish I would have stayed in when I was going basically for free besides books in alaska.

Was too into drugs and didn't really care for it. Which sucks because I would have graduated last year with a major in accounting minor business.

Got a 3.4 the year I went. I'm a dumbass

In my opinion, even if you cant afford state/private 4+ year collage, it's nearly always worth it to at least go for 2 years for an associates from a community collage. Then, if you still want a bachelors, it's only 2 more years from a state or private school, which will save you a lot of moolah. Even if you choose to stick with your associates and never educate yourself further, you've still got enough education to make almost as much as bachelors graduates anyway. Don't knock associates degrees, they can be valuable.

QFT

College is worth it if you pick something relevant to the actual job market:

-Anywhere in medical
-Trade skills
-Business
-Computer science / programming
-Law
-etc

But I see it all the fucking time "Oh I'm going for a liberal arts degree, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it."

Its like holy fuck, you're wasting thousands of dollars to get something that will land you the same damn job if you didn't have it in the first place.

MOOC are something people should look into. although the experience of college very good if you don't really know what you want to do, because its a concentration of many different majors you can learn from many different people...

all in all, if i probably would have rather just gotten a job near a college and spent my free time there. you can even just go to classes and meet people at the beginning of the semester, people don't know if you signed up or not

everything is relative. i got an AA, and it has helped quite a bit.

i'm saving up and might try to pay my way to go back and get a BS in metallurgy or materials science at a decent uni.

Education is always its own reward but definitely be pragmatic about it.

also important to note that a college's purpose is to educate, not to get you a job.  They will teach you almost anything you want.

just because they offer a degree doesn't mean it's worthwhile or that you will make a living with it.
