Why so serious? (about chess)

I've noticed throughout my life that a lot of people who play chess, especially between beginner and intermediate levels, take it way too seriously. As if it was not a game, but a test of true power and man-hood as an individual.
Like a freemason I knew...he played pretty good, he beat me a few times ya know. But once he came over my house regularly and started to realize that I studied the game and was better, he began to resent me. There were things he wasn't aware of, and he took great offense whenever I'd offer pointers or new information. He stopped coming over.
Even my best friend, who sucks pretty bad, takes it so personally and attacks me for being decent, as if it's my fault he refuses to learn how to play.
Then there's people who don't play, and almost seem proud of it. This old man used to always boast "yep, I never learned. Dont even know how the pieces move" every time the subject came up. lol.
I was at this rednecks house, and he said "I dont fuck with that anymore, I saw a man get shot over a game. That was it for me man" (WTF?!?)
Then there's people who know how to play, but aren't any good. They play you once or maybe twice and never play again.
Last but not least you have the people who are your chess buddies. These guys are about your level and they play several games with you, but eventually stop if they think you're stronger.
I never understood why. The only person I've played who did not fall into these butthurt categories is my mom. Shes not too good, but she knows it's just a game.
I for one have never had resentment for any chess player, ever. Weak players are potential students, equal players are competitive challenges, and stronger players I love the most, as they help you improve and learn from mistakes.
Anyone else noticed this? I may just be sensitive to people's insecurity and small resentment..idk.

I think it's because chess is a very difficult game to improve yourself at as well as the fact that it's less popular among younger people with all the great video games.
This makes for a less chess-skilled percentage of the population, which continues to shrink. Nobody likes losing, and the most fun comes from playing people of equivalent skill. Repeatingly beating down somebody without a chance of beating you offers much less fun to yourself, and none to them, only anger and frustration.

Yes, but with weaker players I usually try to play with handicap (take a knight off the board) and nobody has allowed me to do so yet. I try to tell them why Im moving wherever, and tell them my plans. I tell them good options for their side and why. I have tried to teach people openings, but they always think im trying to set them up It's like, if you are going to have an ego, at least be justified. If you dont know what you're doing, you should appreciate help.
Also, when I was a kid, this wasn't an issue. Kids were more mature about it than adults are now.

I was more than an intermediate player 30 years ago. I stopped playing. The only time I play now is if I'm drunk and forget why I hate it. Losing at chess was, to me, more than I wanted to endure and I got not enough satisfaction from winning.
That is why.

Interesting.
I find the game itself more rewarding than whoever wins. Sometimes it's so beautiful, the interplay and exchange, tactics and counter attacks....
I don't get much satisfaction from winning, but I also don't get discouraged from losing.

I've played plenty of 1-5 minute games in my times, but I would never do it on lichess. Way too laggy of a site, plus I no longer have a mouse.

Sometimes it is beautiful. That is very rare. Usually it is just one egregiously dumb move

IMO it's almost like a different game to play bullet or blitz. I like bullet, blitz, and standard times.
What I don't like is correspondence chess. One move a day type shit. Wtf.
