So yesterday I had the bright idea to go mushroom hunting in the howling winds on the beach. Getting sandblasted was not much fun but I did find some interesting mushies for my efforts.
1. I'm thinking either Gym or Pholiota.
Habitat:
Growing in clusters off a decaying log on the beach.

Gills:
The gills were orangey in color attached and hard not to tear the cap up when trying to spore print.

Stem:
The stem was yellow-orange in color, 4-5 inches long, nearly an inch in diameter and fibrous.

Cap:
The cap was orange in color, 4-5 inches across.

Spore print color: Rust-orangey-brown?

Bruising: Stem appeared to bruise brown.
2. This one I think maybe phallus impudicus.
Habitat:
In the sand on a dune among coastal grasses.

Gills: Non-gilled species. Pits instead.
Stem: White 4-6 inches long about 1/2 inch thick.

Cap:
White (thinking maybe the rain washed the color away), 1-1 1/2 inches long and 1/2-3/4 wide, pitted or wrinkled like a morel?

Spore deposit: None taken.
Bruising: None noticed.
Other: What an awful smell this thing put off. A cross between bleach and spermatic. I wouldn't dream of taking this thing home to print even if it hadn't already sporelated much like a puffball would (evidenced by the hole at the top of the phallic)
3. The closest I could find to this one is marasmius epiphyllus (though I'm SURE this isn't the correct one).
This one was growing off a dead blackberry bramble twig near the beach. The cap was kidney shaped and white. The gills (which I would hardly call gills more like veins) were white.

Gymnopilus for sure, the water on the spore print makes it look rusty brown, it really is orange, check when its dried. It looks like you found a stinkhorn? I have never heard on one growing in washington, someone with more exp. than i should know, like Alan. Marasmiellus for sure, did any of them have a blackened stipe, check M. candidus. http://www.rogersmushrooms.com/MediaPath/67B7F9431B014796BBA386F2F9ED63D7.jpg

No, there was no blackened stipe. Just that pure white and only about a millimeter or two long. Very small. Yeah I thought it was a stinkhorn and an interesting place for it to decide to grow.

I really couldn't say. I think it was drift wood. There was lots of drift wood on that beach. But there were also lots of live hardwood and conifer trees. Along the beach though I think there were mostly conifers. So if it was actually an old fallen tree from that particular beach it was probably conifer. Who knows what it once was. Is there a way to tell?
