Turkey Tail ID Request
    #18992850 - 10/17/13 08:16 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello everyone,

Was out looking for Turkey Tails and stumbled across what I Beleive to be T. Versicolor. The fruit bodies shown below meet all of the requirements of themushroomexpert.com's "totally true turkey tail test listed here: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/trametes_versicolor.html

However, I have read elsewhere that the pore surface should be white. The pore surface on the specimens I found today have white near the base of the base (stem) of the pore surface, but most fade to a much darker grey color further out from there. The pores also seem to transition to more of a furry texture than the tiny dotted nature of the pores on the regular white surface.

Can anyone please let me know what the reason for this color change is? Ex: Is it simply a sign of a mature fruit body/ have sporulated, could it be a sign of mold or other invasive organism?

Most Importantly: As I make tea and tincture out of Turkey Tails is this greyish discoloration of the pore surface mean that these are undesirable for this use? or is there potential for them to make me sick?

Any information is greatly Appreciated!!!

I was wondering the same thing and found the same link. The ones i found had quite a few white bellies that transitioned to grey due to the spore/tubes opening up.Have you tried the tea since you posted this??Hers a good side shot of the tubes .......
