New paper on peyote cultivation/decreased availability

Cultivation of peyote: a logical and practical solution to the problem of decreased availability

Quote:

The progress toward and impediments to legally protected cultivation of Lophophora williamsii, commonly known as peyote, are elucidated. Recent increases in the ceremonial and medicinal consumption of peyote are inferred from published data and personal observations of the authors. The conservation-based rationale for peyote cultivation is that the predictable shift in the primary mode of production from the current unsustainable harvesting of wild peyote in habitat to regulated cultivation of peyote, either in situ or under glass, would provide alternative supplies of peyote for current and future use by the Native American Church. Such a change in the principal peyote production system from wild-harvesting to cultivation would logically reduce the harvesting pressure on the peyote populations that survive the intense overharvesting inherent in the present system. We summarize current and evolving aspects of the regulatory environment and emerging perceptions regarding the need for U.S. federal regulations that would provide legal certainty for individuals involved in the adoption of cultivation of culturally acceptable peyote on an economically viable commercial scale.

The Native American Church claims over 100,000 members. I find it hard to believe that there isn't some mass cultivasion going on already

Way too much people to consume wild peyote. It is very silly to find out about difference in europe and usa. Most european countries allow peyote growing and distribution at big scale. Similar scale cultivation in usa would really help native american people to obtain peyote buttons. Anyway, in europe hardly any grower do not consume peyote at all.

I agree there are possibly some sort of "illegal" cultivation of peyote along NAC but who knows.. They should themselves try to get change to law at usa. Starting peyote farm in greenhouse or outdoors is not really so hard thing to do and possible new bigger gardens full of peyote are relatively easy to start cause this cactus doesn't need so much space.

Problems will come after one DEA raid and it can ruin tens of years worth of work to grow peyote. But I have understand some states allow peyote cultivation so probably small scale growing are happening anyway?

It's really sad to know this plant is very endangered and for example goverment don't allow bigger scale peyote growing and distribution for the sake of saving wild peyote cactus.

Does it really matter cause peyote habitat are at mexico and usa so one goverment changes to law about peyote doesn't actually mean anything to protect wild plants.

Maybe something happens when it's too late so save wild specimens...

cept, plastic , is better than glass.
should i get a cape now or something?

we have the technology to terraform land and sea with lophs now.
join us. be part of the solution .

team annie , is most proud of ,
over 20 yrs, of advanced loph conservation experiments.
no applause needed, we do it for the lophs.

as far as the NAC?
if they were that smart , they would have hydro lophs also.
do not ever confuse annie with them.
annie grows more than she mows.
our hearts are the purist, we dont pawn lophs on tourists.

as far as im concerned,
peeps buying lophs online as pets,
might as well be buying ivory or rhino horn.

peeps who buy lophs online
and ,then discreetly pass them off as their own grow?,
should be treated like a dog fur coat at a PETA convention.

if that offends peeps , too bad.
im offended profiteers are destroying the world lophs for profit.
and no, were not even on offense.

we dont have to suffer from loss of lophs.
in the wild , or tame indoors,
we can turn this around.
new teks, and good info, are paramount.
and remember,
the future , and new age ......is NOW!

You have your points, and i agree with you in many parts!

Though you have to consider, that some ''peeps'' like to care there plants by giving them ''home'', like there own environment.
With that process ''peeps'' get peace in there ''souls'' and get the time to bond with nature and the plants them selfs. :sun:

peeps project on me all the time.

let me be perfectly clear,
and all my writings reflect as much in context.

more lophs , of any type of grow is good,
more is more , faster is faster, lots is lots.

fact, lophs are going down, faster than growing up.

anne halonium, always stands for more lophs , rather than less.
anyone else, adding lophs , by any means ,
is indeed in the right spirit, no matter how they do it.

a quality outdoor loph ,
is exactly that, and commendable.
we need way more.

hell, i need more.

as with other bioforms, peeps need to get growing, or face extinction.
the implied point, of the paper and thread.

Would be very cool if europe and canada could export peyote in big scale to native americans to maximize supply for their demand.:yesnod: ...ofc it turns to business but it is business anyway.

I have no myself any purpose to eat peyote and my law is not allow me to even grow it as scale of consumption, but I just love to collect and grow peyote cactus.

Some I have graft also but my stocks are slow growing but more water tolerant than peyote cactus own tap root.

I like myself peyote grown from seed or so, their appearance are just best. Ofc I am ornamental grower. I am almost sure NAC members will grow their own peyote as grafted or with own root. In my mind problem is not the amount of peyote how much it will be produced around the world.

Problem is peyote cultivation around world what cannot reach NAC members anyway and peyote in habitat are very small area compared to peyote growing at artifical gardens around the world.

I dare to say, there are possibility in theory to NAC obtain tons of peyote growing around the world, only small fraction of all cultivation happens in area where are big demand for consumption of the plant. All growing for consumption should really concentrated at bigger scale to area where buttons are consumed. There are lots of big peyote gardens around the world but most of them doesn't grow them for consumption anyway.

But, cause I am far away from usa anyway, In my mind this problem is NAC problem and only they can try effect to law in priority to allow peyote survive in their own habitat and start legal big scale growing no matter are plants grafted or not. Big role for this problem of peyote in habitat are usa and mexico goverments and their law regulation about peyote cultivation and consumption in case of freedom of religion and protect wild peyote habitat.
