Hey man, look at it this way: At least you'll be there for her and with her when she goes.
Earlier in this thread I said I took my cat to the vet to have him put down. That's not exactly true...
For a brief preface, my cat was my best friend for years when I didn't have any human friends. I moved around a lot as a kid, and there were years when I had no friends in school and my cat was my only buddy. He was always there for me.
I got a call from my dad one night while I was enrolled at a University taking a summer class. He said that he had taken my cat to the vet, and the vet said he had serious kidney issues and he wasn't going to be around much longer. I didn't really understand at the time, but my dad asked me if I wanted to come home for the night to hang out with the little guy.
I said "Well, I can't. I have to be in class tomorrow." (It was summer semester Cell Biology course, a month long, so missing a day was like missing a week)
I ended up missing the next day of class anyway. I was really worried about my cat, and drank the whole night after my dad called me. So, I could've gone home and spent the night with my cat when he really needed me, but I was selfish and didn't.
Got a call from my dad that day. My cat had died. He died alone on the back porch of our house. I could've gone home that night and spent his last hours with him, like he had helped me from feeling alone so many times before, but I didn't.
Shit still bothers me.
Anyway dude, make your last moments with your pet worth it.

Hey I work in Vet Med. Sounds like a neuropathy. Did you do compleat chem and CBC? and a tick panal. 4 dx checks for a 4 differnt pathgins in which two of the ones can cause the symtom you described. both treatable with Doxycillan Have you tried any treatment yet. like Steroid theropy/antibiotics.. Sometimes when money is an issue they try a shotgun approach just treat for what they most likly think it might be. If no improvment in a few days well makes it easer to make that utamate distion normally 72 hr is a good time to see if there is any improvment. Unfornatly there are some conditions in older dogs that are not fixable. There are some brain tumers in dogs but a lot of time there is a slight differnce between the left eye point of dialation and the right eye. usually one's a bit smaller or bigger than the other one. also if the eyes are going back in forth like a rapid motion that is a vistibular desease or in laymans terms a problem with the inner ear. That is also fixable. Sorry you have to pay so much. I work in the field and at times I feel they really take advantage of the situation. Good luck

Wow that would do it and if she tested + on an Idex snap test she still has active lymes. Lymes don't just disapear it has flar ups Need to get that pup on some heavy duty anitbiotics. Can you tell me is she has develope a uveitis that is blood pooling behind the eye. Something lyms can do. If it was my dog I'd give her a good week before I made any desistions.

I remember putting my golden retriever named chester down. He was only 4 years old and got throat cancer. It killed me seeing him in so much pain, he couldnt walk or eat or anything. It is peaceful how they put them down, he was on his pillow in the vets office and we were all holding him and he just went to sleep. I cried like a fucking baby

This If you put her down my idea is opiates to feel good, then ether to knock her out, then more opiates to kill.

Thanks again for everyone's well-wishes. I figured I owe y'all an update.
Eddee, we are trying the shotgun approach. She's on a variety of antibiotics and pain killers. My wife now thinks she has toxoplasmosis and she's going back to the vet this evening. It's been really tough because some days she seems like she's getting better, walking around, chewing on sticks and then this weekend she went back to laying around whimpering and refusing to eat. Im also really pissed because the neurologist we took her to wont answer any of my questions over the phone. Says he needs to see her again before he can prescribe anything different. Another 300 bucks to spend 2 minutes with her. I feel like he's just dicking me around.
Much love to all you guys.

I had to have my golden retriever put down just under 5 years ago due to stomach cancer. It fucking sucks when you have to let your dog go because you can't afford thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of surgeries and x-rays, but it's better than letting them suffer. Go to the store, buy a nice juicy steak and some ice cream for your dog, and spend the day talking to him/her

I really hope all goes well for Banana... she seems like a great companion!
I will also sympathize with the frustration at spending lots of money for medical test etc to only come up with inclusive information or need for further tests. I have had 2 cats (under 5 yrs) where I would spend over $2000 each to never find the cause or a cure. I would say get the best information you can and spend what you can reasonably afford. I can tell you that in all my examples my best money spent was on Prednisolone, which extended the life expectancy on my 2yr old cat with terminal cancer or FIP? It greatly improved his health short term and we were able to spend some quality time with him before his last day came (truly priceless).
In last 10 yrs I have had 4 beloved pets pass away. 1 was due to making it to old age, and 3 were medical conditions that affected them at young age which made it worse. I made the decision on three of them to be euthanized at my vet with me being present and holding them. The fourth I kept holding out hope for, but died here at home in the middle of the night - and I regret now not putting him peacefully down sooner...
While I do forever miss my pets and it is the hardest thing to do, I do not regret taking them into the vet for their final sleep. If you have a good vet, it is quick, compassionate, peaceful, and most importantly painless. If you can afford home visit then do it, but if you animal is sick its probably used to going to the vet anyways. It is tough enough to make the decision to euthanize, you dont want your last memories to be anything horrific or to cause an extension of their pain "ie: old yellar'. All mine went while being held, being told their loved, and eating their favorite people food. Professional Euthanasia is the last kind thing you can do for your pet...

Your dog looks absolutely precious and adorable, I hope everything goes well on her side. I've had to deal with the same dilemma more times than I can count with my basset hound and it's one of the most unpleasant experiences imaginable. Poor guy's had his share of misfortunes from eating rocks and requiring immediate emergency surgery to having spinal problems. It cost us tens of thousands of dollars in health-care and tons of stress but the joy he gives you from leaping up at you after a long, stressful day more than makes up for it all!
Really, sincerely, genuinely hope he gets better. Sending positive vibes your way, please keep us updated!

Brewmaster said: See that beautiful little bulldog that is my avatar? Her name is Banana. Formerly Savanah. We've spent over a grand this week trying to figure out what's wrong with her. Two vets and a neurologist. On Wednesday she woke up completely blind and unable to walk. One vet said she had a stroke. Neurologist said it wasn't. Either an immune disease, infectious disease or cancer. They want another 4000 to do an MRI and spinal tap which we can't afford. Especially just to find out that she needs more expensive treatment. Right now we have her on a variety of meds to treat a variety of disorders and she's taking pain killers but she seems miserable.
We decided that we wouldn't keep her alive for our own sake, that if she was in pain that we would do the humane thing and put her to sleep. But how long do I wait for the meds to do anything if at all? I haven't slept in days because I've been up all night with her whining and barking. I know she's scared because she can't see or walk. I can barely see because I've been crying nonstop for days.
I know someone here has been in the same boat. How do you put down your best friend? I really don't want to just drop her off at some crematorium. I wanted her to die of old age in her sleep but now I've got to make the hardest decision of my life. I want to be with her when she goes. Should I feed her a shit ton of opiates? I don't think I have the heart to put a bullet in her noggin.
Sorry to be a bummer but I really need some advice. If you've had this problem, what did you do? What would you do? How do you kill your best friend in the whole world?
sorry. my dad went through the same thing...
he ended up putting her down himself... gun shot to the head. said it was the hardest thing hes done in awhile.
