Cut stems turning to black goo

I recently moved from the twist and pull method to cutting the stems with a straight razor.
Now some of the cuts are turning to black goop. I tried UTFSE to no avail. What is it?

you inadvertently created a bacterial contamination with the decaying mushrooms, cut it off.

Should I have flame sterilized the blade first before cutting? I wasn't having these kind of problems when I was using twist and pull :/

Yes you should have flame sterilized and cut in a sterilized space. That seems to be a bad infection if it was me I'd toss it and I'm pretty sure many others would agree. How many flushes you got off them just one?

Yes, just one. I already tossed them, but I'm trying to learn from my mistake.

next time you cut just cut back on the misting for a few days before you dunk, this should dry everything up a bit and give the stumps a chance to revert back to myc

This makes ZERO sense. This isn't sterile culture work. Aborts and cuttings are highly resistant to contamination.
That said, drowning them in water is going to cause rot. Aborts that get wet and aged look similar. I always remove as much of the fruiting body as possible to avoid this possibility.

Well sorry JH I wasn't trying to give bad info I was just trying to explain what I've learned and you are right about the sterilized space but before I started following that idea I had way more problems than after I started taking it to my "clean room" but I know for sure that it's right for everyone to sterilize the scalpel between uses or separate grows either with alcohol or flame or toss and use new. this is all just me sharing what I have learned in my own uses. Sorry

Whilst it's probably good practice I never bother. When I harvest a mono I just get in there hacking away with any old sharp knife that is lying around. Never caused any problems whatsoever

That's my thought as well. Things look pretty wet there. Although I don't see how they could be staying so wet if you're using a properly made SGFC they should dry off pretty quickly.

I believe my sgfc is proper. Holes on all six sides two inches apart. Four inches of perlite. Elevated off the ground. No fans in the room.
