is kava kava liver toxic?

I just bought some kava kava candies. I haven't tried it yet. I did some research on it and it is said to be bad for the liver and have some drug interactions with other "happy pill" types. Kava kava is banned in most western countries which I didn't know. Amazon sells these. Was the reason for its liver toxicity because of a bad batch so it got a bad name from then on? It is said to have euphoric effects which has potential to become addicting. I don't mind if it taste good. LOL. Are candies safer than leaves and raw form like powdered?
Anything can be liver toxic even OTC drugs and alcohol, even water if you drink a whole tank of it.

The bans came about due to reports of toxicity. But the acute toxicity that was causing problems back in 2003 seems to be due to bad batches, possibly from using the aerial parts of the plant or from contamination. The aerial parts contain toxins that the roots do not and manufacturers could cheap out by using them to get more out of their plants. At the time, it created a scare, and that certainly had lasting effects on its reputation. They don;t seem to do use the aerial parts anymore though. That type of acute toxicity is not seen normally just form regular kava use. Europe even lifted their bans. But like you said, anything in excess can be bad. Chronic or long-term use may have unknown side effects for some people just like alcohol. They also recommend not to combine with alcohol because it can put extra stress on your organs.

I just started re-using my kava kava product:
<SNIP>
I had opened the bottle but didn't finish it for months. It's not expired but when I used it today, my throat became very itchy, although I feel euphoric with just 1 tablespoon. Not sure if its age when I first opened the bottle gave it more potency or maybe the hot weather somehow gave it a different strength. Great stuff nonetheless.
Curious if Albert Hoffmann or Sasha Shulgin could have come up with a drug derived from kava kava? That should be interesting. I think they only messed with plant sources with known effects historically, right? Especially Hoffman with LSD (derived from morning glory?). Kava Kava could be full of potential then? I'm not familiar with Shulgin's drugs and where they were derived from if it's plant source or straight chemical.

Likely little progress was made because kavalactones are generally toxic and a carcinogen. They also mess around with liver enzyme function so they wouldnt play well with others.
Theyve also been shown to cause programmed cell death.

All things in moderation. If you abuse any drug you increase the chances of damaging yourself. Knowing your source is also important.
Also this:
Quote:
in a few individuals kava may be hepatotoxic due to overdose, prolonged treatment, comedication, and probably triggered by an unacceptable quality of the kava raw material; standardization is now required, minimizing thereby hepatotoxic risks.
