How to verify that nobody is eavesdropping on your secure connection
    #19078019 - 11/03/13 12:08 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I just found a post on Reddit about this useful site. It will let you know if someone is eavesdropping on your secure connection (ie. SSL / https). It could be your work, school, or even your ISP. If you've ever been asked to install a custom security certificate or use special procedures in order to gain internet access, you might be at risk.

Basically you go to the site with an internet connection that you know to be secure, and print it out. Then if you want to verify your SSL is working, visit one of the listed sites using the connection in question, click the lock icon in your browser, and view the certificate details. It should list an "SHA1 fingerprint". If the fingerprint is not the same as what's shown on the printout, your SSL traffic is probably being intercepted by a third party (although some large sites like Facebook use multiple certificates and could cause a false positive).

For the record, the Shroomery's legitimate SSL fingerprint is 62:42:8F:B6:0B:46:83:11:D9:B6:98:57:47:72:64:78:87:CC:67:92.

This probably won't affect many people (except maybe if you work for a company with an overbearing IT department), but I still think it's a good tip to know.

Visit https://www.grc.com/fingerprints.htm for a more comprehensive explanation.

Interesting! I was experimenting with the firefox add-on Lightbeam

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lightbeam/

It creates a "real time visualization" of who is monitering your activity. Its suprising sometimes who exactly is watching you :strokebeard:
