Learning to play an istrument as an adult?
    #19077097 - 11/02/13 09:03 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Is it doable?

I'd love to learn to play the fiddle, but that seems extremely difficult. The guitar seems easier, but (almost) equally cool.

The harmonica would be badass, but I don't have the lung strength.

What do y'all think? Should I attempt it?

I started violin at 24 and I enjoy it immensely and have no regrets or reservations about it. Having played guitar before that for 8 years or so definitely helped but if you're into making beautiful sound.. you have to at least try.

Learning to make music at any age is good for for your brain ! It comes easier when your young and still a "dry sponge" but you can do it ! Dedicate x amount of time to anything and you will have x amount of success

Pretty cool to see this on the front page because I was just contemplating this on my ride home from work. I was thinking guitar too. Well initially I thought keys, but i like the easy portability of a guitar I guess. BANJO MAYBE?!

Banjo would be extremely cool! But I've heard it's very difficult.

Really? I would think it would be about the same as guitar. I've hear mando is supposed to be very hard. I think thinking about difficulty of certain instruments and factoring that into picking one to start playing is probably the wrong way to go about it anyway. Getting decent with ANYTHING is going to take a substantial amount of hard work, no matter which instrument you pick. Pick the one you think makes the pertiest sounds and run with it!

As a musician that plaze several 'struments, I would encourage you wholeheatedly! Don't forget: just a few chords or riffs can get you playing a number songs and styles right away!

I've been playing guitar for a couple of years & really like it.

Here's the thing though, there are TONS of guitars on craigslist put on there by adults who thought it would be easy to 'learn how to play guitar'. SO many people buy a guitar, a chord book and then are suprised at the difficulty of actually playing.

If you really sincerely want to learn an instrument OP, go for it. But understand that it takes a lot of practice and a real desire to get decent at it. So discipline and at least some commitment are a definite must-have.

My wife (in her 40's now) took up the fiddle a couple of year ago, btw. It's definitely a tough instrument to learn but she's slowy getting better. Oh and finding an instructor can be much harder than guitar, but it's a cool instrument to play for sure.

Go for it, OP
Sure, it may be a tad easier for the lit'luns pre-responsible grown up bullshit but it IS doable
Just gotta make it a priority, but it'll be worth it
And I do agree that it'll be good for ya', neuroplastocity & all that jazz
Here's to it

One thing to note.
Jamming with your instrument with your friends and other musicians, if you've been practicing and can get a groove going, is one the most fun things I've found to do but it is sort of hidden away from most people because you have to have some proficiency, or at least a bit of knowledge and ability, on an instrument or with your voice. A huge motivation for me to practice is for the ability to play with others.

I'm 29 and have been taking violin lessons for a few months now. You should definitely go for it.

One thing with mandolin is that the fingerboard is pretty cramped. Tenor banjo is tuned in the same intervals and I find the reach more natural.

it is all just repetition of patterns and application of technique

those are very human abilities,
so why not?
