I don't know which Gymnopilus you have. Frankly, the keys to Gymnopilus in North America baffle me and you are in Africa.......so I have even less chance of getting to species for you.

According to this site the gymnopilus found in South Africa is Gymnopilus Sp - not sure what that stands for but i think i found more today
http://s5.postimg.org/tntmcaik7/More_orange_gills.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/ay1mvjptj/More_orange_caps.jpg Found in same area anf also growing off log, spore print orange aswell
And then on the same log, just further down i found these reddish guys, when i picked them a few hours ago they were more red with little spots on them, doing a spore print now and seems to be pinkish color, when i picked them the gills were covered in a thin white fleshy piece that i had to tear away to expose the gills, sorry for all the pics but im excited to figure out what they are
Species 3

Looks like red bruising, if the are also gymnopilus i dont think they the same species as the big orange ones from before, they have pretty streaky looking stems, also reddish.

Your Gymnopilus appear to be in the luteofolius-aeruginosus clade which means that they are likely to contain psilocybin.
Also unlikely to be known to science...Its quite a difficult group.

So all the Gymnopilus in this thread are active?

Hard to say. The ones with the reddish tops look active to me.
The others might be the same species much older, or might be a different species.
Pics of them in all stages of development help a lot. Hard to say whether or not the reddish ones are the same as the yellowish ones, but I bet the OP knows!

Im a she
Im happy to hear atleast two of the three are active
I do however strongly believe the yellowish ones and the reddish ones are two different type of the Gymnopilus species. They were on oposite ends of this awesome long log and they seemed to stick to their respective ends, no yellow ones growing near reds and visa versa. Super excited since we live on a 10ha farm and most of its covered in forest.
Also found a BIG white shroom - looks like you get ina a grocery store - spore print was light brown pinkinsh, not sure if its worth posting a pic tho.
I have much better pics of all our shrooms on my digi, did macro shots even, these pics on this thread are from my stupid tablet camera but i will have to resize the digi pics before i upload.
Thanks for all the helps guys been trying to convince my boyfriend not to eat anything before we get a good id - renal failure sounds like a crappy ending to a great weekend of mushroom hunting.

Well it is possible that you have two different Gymnopilus on the same log, but it is more likely that they are the same thing in different stages of development.

I schem the red ones are gymnopilus luteofolius and the orange ones gymnopilus spectabilis But thats just from me comparing on google images so im probably wrong
