That is not H. petaloides tough. It's P. ostreatus. Far too robust to be H. petaloides. And look at those widely spaced gills!

Generally oyster type things growing out of the ground tend to be Hohenbuehlia.
These do not look very robust to me, also the dark colors point strongly in the direction of Hohenbuehlia.

Your right Alan. I think they look closer to Hohenbuehlia. Foot inserted in mouth yet again.

Or the Pleurotus growing out of the ground get identified as Hohenbuehelia. It's far from usual habitat, but I see no reason why P. ostreatus wouldn't grow from woodchips. And as I said, the cultivated ones dumped outside end up looking like the OP. The gills still look to widely spaced for H. petaloides.

I second Hohenbuehelia. The suspected Lactarius rufus look similar to different candy caps I have found in Florida.

Try drying the suspected candy caps out and seeing what they smell like.

They are great to crumble up or pulverize and add to sugar cookies, and probably other desserts as well. The ones I have smell very strongly of maple syrup, and I found them August of 2012!

I can tell you firsthand that they are wonderful. Definitely more of a smell than a flavor, but very nice. This all depends, of course, on the identity of the ones which you found
