So... are people becoming more religious or is it just me?
    #19075564 - 11/02/13 03:01 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

It may just be me, but I swear I've seen a heavy influx of religious Facebook posts/thank god statements lately. It's getting pretty annoying. It would make sense; people tend to turn to religion during scary situations. For some ill advised people, the recent government shutdown could be classified as a scary situation.

So Shroomery, have you noticed the same kind of increase, or is this all in my head?

I think people are starting to recognize the value of spirituality and the numinous in a world inundated with science. I don't think people are becoming more religious.

I don't think there's an increase. That's what you'll get when mixing using social network sites and religious people.

I think as the developed world itself becomes less religious (growing numbers of atheists, agnostics, "nones"), the people who do still believe will become increasingly vocal in their beliefs as a knee-jerk reaction.

If a science vs religion debate doesn't start in this thread I'm going to be severely disappointed.

IN response to OP: no, I haven't noticed...except the one preacher guy that I used to work with who keeps telling people they are evil for having abortions and being homosexual, etc...

This is an interesting take. When I think about it, I can't think of any atheists that have turned into religious people that I know, but I can think of a myriad of religious people who just seem to be stepping their game up.

Hmm, I suppose it could also be a result of the increase in religious topics hitting politics (I know you said that you haven't noticed an increase, but I just didn't think about the abortion or marriage debates).

Both of these and I've seen it too.  Things are pretty messed up society wise it may be an easier way to take things if you look at it as being run by some kind of religious order.

Oddly, the most truly religious or spiritual people I've met are the ones who almost never speak of it.
I just see most of the outward declarations of religion (i.e. Christianity) on facebook as publicity statements. Most of the people I know use their religion  as a get-out-of-responsibility-free card for their actions.

Well, social conservatism has been big in the US since the '08 election, so politics probably have had an effect, to a degree.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that a decent proportion of people who claim to be Christian are culturally Christian but spiritually agnostic. Jewish leadership has acknowledged that "Jewishness" isn't one single thing, but can actually be broken down into three categories: culturally Jewish, spiritually Jewish, and (I think) biologically/genetically Jewish. They understand that an individual may not be all three, or even two, of these things, but still be considered Jewish. They had to acknowledge this because an unusually large proportion of people who identify as Jews don't believe in the Jewish religion, compared to Christians and other religious groups. However, because of their perpetual minority status (until the creation of Israel) the only thing to keep them going as a distinct people was a strong culture. Pretty much every Jewish person I've met never goes to synagogue and certainly none of them believes the world is 6000 years old.

This may be particularly pronounced with Judaism, but I think it applies to Christians as well. Plenty of people identify as Christians and don't believe in the talking snake and the apple and all that. Hundreds of years ago, the Catholic church would label individuals who didn't believe in every last word of Catholic doctrine as heretics. They've become more relaxed in their rules over the centuries because of Protestantism, but nonetheless history shows that you're really only Catholic if you're down with their strict rules 100%. Can you really be spiritually Christian if you don't even believe in the book itself? Once you start picking and choosing what you do and don't like out of the book, doesn't that make it meaningless?

Maybe not entirely on topic, but interesting to think about regardless.

Pretty much this. Everybody knows facebook is just personal PR, the people posting probably just smoked meth and fucked a tranny and started feeling guilty about it so they said a prayer and made a religious fb post to win back their self-perceived innocence.

Man both times I've ever tried/been on antipsychotics, I started believing in god and shit (they act as kind of a chemical lobotomy, ironically :teehee:).

They're prescribing those more... who knows.

Also maybe its a Custer's last stand kind of effect.
