Hydrating Perlite: No Colander Needed & No Mess!

Here's what you do it's not rocket science:
1. Simply take a small nail and carefully poke holes on bottom of the bag of perlite and then up each side from the bottom of the bag up about 3 to 4 inches. NOTE: Don't poke too many holes into the bag so that the structural integrity is compromised (very difficult to do) and don't go too big so that perlite leaks out.
2. Open the top of the bag and hold it under the faucet then run water over the perlite.
3. While holding the bag, let it fill to the top with water so that all the perlite is submerged. After submerged, carefully close the top of the bag and squeeze it until all the water runs out the holes you have poked into it.
After a little time the water in the bag will have lowered enough so that you can tightly squeeze the bag closed up top by wrapping the bag up with one hand. This will create more pressure in the bag. While holding the top with one hand, use the other to squeeze out water from the bag wherever it needs to be squeezed out. Do this until there is no more standing water in the bag. BOOM! Your perlite is now fully hydrated and ready for use.
Yes, pictures would help get the point across but I don't have a camera.

Another really easy way to do is go ahead and put it in your sgfc and stick it in your shower, turn the shower head on, and moisten the perlite. You're basically using your sgfc as a huge colander. You may have to elevate it in the shower with cups or something so the water drains out properly

The shower way works great. The OP way is not the same. You want to get rid of the dust and super small particulate. Pouring the bag out into your SGFC gets rid of a lot of the dust. If you pour water into a bag with drainage holes you're just going to make slurry out of the perlite dust and that might effect the performance of your SGFC. I like to make sure my perlite is nice and airy.

The shower method compacts the perlite too much eventually. I fill the tub up while the SGFC is in the tub. I found that the more you use the shower, the more the perlite gets packed down and eventually gets too packed to work effectively. If you slowly submerge the perlite by running the faucet and letting the tub fill up, it doesn't compact the perlite.

Well I've been doing it the way in the OP for a few years now and I've had no problems whatsoever in a SGFC.

I just rake it up with my fingers, gets it nice and loose again and no loss in moisture.

If you want to take the extra step, go ahead. My way, there is no raking involved nor needed. I thought the point of this forum was to find an easier way of doing the same thing?
To each his own.....
I should know a little bit about compaction being a civil engineer who specializes in geotechnical engineering (read soil....read perlite...read compaction). But, go ahead and rake it and take that extra step.
Oh BTW, my method can be done while cakes are sitting in the SGFC. Can the shower method (including raking) be done with cakes still fruiting in it?

Not trying to start anything here...but it's just moving your hands thru the perlite.
Your acting like it's an extra step, but it's really not.....let's be real here....we're talking about an extra 5 seconds.

How can it not be an extra step when it actually is? Also, your hand or whatever you use gets nasty and you have to take the extra step to clean it off. That's actually 2 extra steps instead of just letting the SGFC drain by itself.
Also....
Can the shower method be done with cakes still fruiting in the SGFC? My method can.
Can the shower method also clean the perlite? My method can.
Can the shower method be mixed with a little bleach to disinfect the perlite after it gets nasty? My method can.

Ok, so if you consider rinsing the so called "nasty" rocks of of your hands, add another 5 seconds.
Last time I checked, rocks did not meet the requirements of being "nasty", as they are just rocks.

First of all, calm down, this is not a competition....
Secondly the OP was refering to "New" in the bag perlite, not used.
Thirdly new perlite is "clean", and should only need rinsing.
Please stop trying to one up me, I was only giving my opinion, you are making yourself look like a jackass.

You still need to wash them off correct?

I know that. You are the one that came in with the smart alec comment of "is impossible?". I was just showing why it is not needed.

It is still an extra step to have to rake the perlite after the force of the shower compacts it down.

But, it grows stuff on it eventually and does need cleaned.

I am not trying to one up you. I am trying to give my opinion that filling the tub vs. the shower is a better method and the reasons for it.
If you take that as personal, then I suggest you not answer every single thread out there. And BTW....name calling is usually the sign of a losing argument.

No. It's more like some people don't understand that their words have consequences on the internet. Or they can say what they want and claim they were just joking.
I only get offended when people post jerk posts to me like Hacker's first response or moon me with an emoticon. If those were just jokes, I'm sorry for taking offense (really, how can someone be sorry for how they feel?) but maybe next time think before you post.
I'm done in this thread. I was just trying to give an option that didn't involve having to rake and loosen the perlite. You know...one less step. But have your circle jerk. I don't care anymore.

OK I will take that into consideration next time.
Perhaps you should try to not be so sensitive about things. All that was in good fun and you took offense to it. You didn't have to. You could have joined in and had a little fun with it Think about it. Something only offends if you let it

I took offense because I know the physics of what I'm talking about. But hacker couldn't hack someone having a better idea and had to keep arguing with me about it.
Perlite becomes buoyant (it floats) in water. This is way better than raking your hands through the perlite. The compacted perlite will stay like mud unless you separate each individual piece like the water does.
Now, I'm done in this thread.

I never knocked your idea, I defended someone elses.....you are getting annoying now.....

I never said your method was better or worse.....I am done here....you are obviously just looking for some attention.....
Hydrate the perlite however works best for you...and if you are worried about it getting compacted, you can always fix that by "fluffing it up" with your hands.....this has worked for 1000s of grows, without a shower being involved.

If you just didn't post things like "you are getting annoying now", this wouldn't have gone as far as it has. You are not god here.
Who wants attention? Look at your post count......
