Yea it was very dry up there but we managed to find what few mushrooms were growing. It wasn't an easy task, the Pholiotas were the only mushroom fruiting in abundance.
pseudo- I found the Tricholomopsis on the last day at the end of the trail, I was all excited. The Jewish guys were super chill. But I'm still laughing at the fact that his special pomegranate pipe was a plastic bottle! And yes, we definitely need to get together for another hunt. Thanks again for the Oysters, had them on some pizza when we got back home.

Nice photos Ran-D
It looks like an amazing place. I'd love to see a redwood in it's natural environment. I've only ever seen them in European style gardens.

Interesting story about the Sequoia redwood... It's a Cherokee name. At the time when the Cherokee tribes were being integrated into new Euro/American culture a half breed the Cherokee called Sequoia was working to develop an alphabet for the Cherokee language to help with the integration. The Cherokee saw this as an act of dis loyalty and allegiance to the whites. Sequoia was so named because it is a curse word in their language. It means "pig inside". A reference to his white half. In the Cherokee language there is no worse curse than to call someone a pig. I would indicate modern culture equivalents but that would be a lot more offensive. The point is that the name Sequoia is an intentional insult. We never knew that when we (ignorant and aloof whities) commemorated that individual by naming a tree after him. And now there are many more references that honor the tree itself with that name. National parks, campgrounds, housing communities, etc. All of it based on the foulest curse in the Cherokee language! I thought it was funny. I hope I didn't bore everyone.

This is entirely possible, but is entirely conjecture.
The general claim is that the genus was named specifically for George Guess who's Cherokee name was Sequoya [Ssiquoya]. Even the etymology of that name is in dispute. If it was applied by that community with that meaning and for that reason, it is certainly ironic that they were therefore unable or unwilling to record it. If you know of a community who specifically preserves that story I would love to know of it.
There doesn't seem to be anything verifiable to support this claim as regards the naming of the genus for George Guess, and the origin of the naming is not actually clear. Endlicher certainly never said so, and if anybody knew, it would be him.

It is. If there's a surviving oral tradition of it it is even cooler. The ironic component amuses me though. Not in a derisive manner, mind you.

I'm always one to appreciate correction in the face of fact. But as you stated, there are few convictions on this matter. My information comes from a language book written by Prentice Robinson about the Cherokee language. You see, I have a small amount of Cherokee heritage and I thought it would be novel to learn some of the language. I gave up after discovering that it's about as difficult as Chinese!?! And probably has closer ties there than any Euro language!!! That and I have no one to share it with. Anyway... The tale is a matter of record in the folklore of spoken Cherokee. And as historical records go, native folk lore is about as common a reference as any I suppose. Let's also keep in mind that the atrocities perpetrated on native American peoples has commonly been spun into something less horrible for historical record. I'm inclined to believe what the people who invented the meaning of the word do.

I find the whole word thing pretty interesting. It's ironic like how we named Yosemite, which I believe translates into "a people who should be feared" or "a people who will kill you," or something close to that. The Natives actually called the valley the Ahwahnee.
