Does  yellow  ALWAYS  mean contamination?

Yea, kinda.

Why is the foil still on?

That gets removed after sterilization and stays off.

if I'm right here, yellow is usually metabolites and is a good sign
the myce is fighting some kind of contamination

You are right.  I am not sure how to tell them apart (metabolites and yellow contam).
But yellow is NOT ALWAYS a contam. I have never grown a yellow contam but i have seen some yellow metabolites a lot.

I say wait it out. It may stall out too.

I thought  exposed the  inoculation  holes  would greatly  increase  the risk of  cont during colonization.

That layer of vermiculite on top is your contam barrier...as long as it stays dry.

The foil just keeps water from dripping in your jars while sterilizing. Leaving it on afterwards prevents GE and stalls growth.

Remove the foil after sterilizing.

Cool.  thanks.

Ok I  guess my  next question is...I have about 6 jars that  haven't  showed  signs of  any  inoculation,  so I'm assuming no spores were  took to it... After several weeks  of  just  sitting there,  is it ok for me  to  attempt to  inoculate them.... or do you think the  moisture balance  will be  off if I  do?

In my experience leaving the foil on doesn't prevent GE. I have also heard that it protects from contaminates in the air that fall downwards. But hey, to each their own.

if they have sat for "several" weeks not growing anything in them

then you will prolly just wanna toss them out and try again. The

moisture could be off or some contamination in them thus why they didn't work the first time maybe.

Agreed. Leaving the foil on is not as big of a deal as people make it.  How do you think mycellium survives underground, or in a tree, or in a pile of manure? There's still gas exchange going on.

Remake the jars.  Its good practice too.

This was just bad typing. Read it like one sentence.

"if I'm right here, yellow is usually metabolites and is a good sign the myce is fighting some kind of contamination"

By having many directions to flow. A jar only allows one direction and, for best results, shouldn't be covered in foil.

Drawing correlations from outdoor growing to indoor growing is often a mistake. By your logic, FAE would be a good idea during colonization because that's what happens outside. Or why bother pasteurizing?

There are many things people get away with, but we advise against some things because we encourage best results.
