I attempted to post these last night. I had a fairly lengthy ID request post all typed up and at the point of completion when I accidentally hit one wrong button and terminated my browser. With the fact that my print specimens still had not produced plus being EXTREMELY pissed off about the browser mishap, I decided to wait. Until now. As I had suspected, the prints still have not been produced. I think I remember reading something about a possible 24 hr waiting period possible for Gyms? I can't exactly remember. Test subjects are still "testing" regardless. 7 PM EST tonight will be 24 hrs. I found this small flush yesterday during lunch break at work. They were nestled in a scrub pine thicket growing from the needle litter. I have not studied the Gym. species in depth as I have Amanitas and a few others, so I am unfamiliar with Key ID characteristics. One thing I will say for this mushroom that separates it from any other fungi I have collected is its unique, STRONG odor. I am not going to go as far as claiming it to be offensive, but Real close. I am sure there are some that would say "real close my ass!!" Either way it definitely has a scent of its own. If it is not a ID "tell" for this species, it TRULY should be! Anywho...
Here are the photos. Maybe someone can recognize them from these. Maybe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You think part of that smell might be due to their being putrid?
They surely look in keeping with G. junonius/ventricosus. Are they as large as they appear? The locality would suggest junonius, unless there are further species in that ilk in your region.
I too am deficient in Gymnopilus, with the exception of some understanding of the species in my local experience.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Oh!! I forgot to mention, I believe the reason for the discolorations and being putrid is due to the early frost we had a couple mornings ago. A lot of the local plant life are reeling from freezer burn. I truly meant to include this bit of info in original post. Thanks for the reminder!!
So gyms do not "sport" their own unique odor? I see no reason to try to explain in detail the smell. Anyone that has encountered this unique "aroma" , has it burnt into their memory banks regardless if they wont it there or not. I know I do. Whhhoooaaa!

I don't think they are Gyms for a few reasons, but I could be wrong.
1)The narrowing at the base of the stem.
2)The spores look brown in the bottom left corner of your first picture.
3)They just don't quite look right to me.
If they were Gyms, there's also a chance that they aren't active considering they were found growing from pine.

They look like old rotten Gymnopilus to me and probably active but too far gone for consumption.

Hey, No fear of these coming any where near being consumed. Thats not my reason for the hunt. This is only one method of ID in the many processes I have in my "arsenal" for proper nomenclature in my gallery. Although it is only a hobby to me, I do my best to keep reliable and updated titles in G+ Photos. Hell, if yall have some time to kill, check it out.... www.google.com/+PetePannÂ
There are a couple other albums included there other than just mushrooms, also. Lots of cool "outdoors" type stuff. (Scenery, local wildlife, etc.) 100% Family, Age, and Gender safe. Feel free to check it all out!

It was a VERY STRONG and "thick" mushroom smell. It was not what I considered to be a repulsive odor more so than just VERY overpowering to the point that you could not help but make the "repulsive odor face" when the first initial "waft" hit you. I suppose it possible that they were turning putrid as suggested above but the scent did not spell "decay" more so than extremely FRESH. That was my take from it anyway. I have quite a few finds of many different varieties of mushrooms under my belt and I know for a fact I have never encountered one to smell so loud, rotten or not.
