Will Ireland Be the Next Country to Legalize Pot?
A member of parliament is presenting a proposal that would bring even more green to the Emerald Isle.

October 28, 2013  |

Apparently Ireland may have another lucky leaf.

This week, member of the Irish Parliament, Luke Ming Flanagan told the Irish Times about his introduction of a bill to legalize cannabis throughout the country.

The proposal would allow possession of up to an ounce of marijuana, and would allow up to six plants to be grown at home. However, children would be prohibited from being anywhere near the plant, which also includes being in a home with plants growing.

The setup would be something similar to what’s happening in the Netherlands, with cafes and clubs people can frequent as well.

Flanagan has been an unapologetic advocate for legalizing marijuana for quite some time now, and according to cannabis news site Smell the Truth, has been to jail a few times for possession himself, one of the times for mailing over 200 joints to the Irish Parliament. However he told The Journal earlier this year that while he no longer uses marijuana in Ireland he still tokes up legally in Amsterdam.

According to his proposed bill, the government would oversee all sales, ads, and labeling for dispensaries. But they would also have to license cultivation for everyone—both private and commercial grows. Along with that, a new government agency would be created to teach the public about marijuana use and marijuana advertising would be more restricted than alcohol ads.

According to online news source “Toke of the Town,” Flanagan’s Cannabis Regulation Bill will be presented on November 6 and will have to go through the lower house as well as either the upper house or the President of Ireland.

Not the best legalization plan I've ever seen, but I still hope it passes!

:awethumb: I approve of any laws that legalize weed in a country which is within a driving distance from where I live

The politician who introduced this, Ming, is an independent and the parties in power do not support it, so it has no hope of passing as Ming himself has admitted. This is just about generating debate and publicity for the issue so in that respect Ming is succeeding in his goals
