Another Room-mate issues thread
    #19070789 - 11/01/13 04:30 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I live with four other roommates, luckily I have my own room. Unfortunately one roommate ALWAYS has two or three friends over so it's more like I'm living with eight people. I'm the only one who cleans and these rats literally just throw garbage on the ground when there is a trash bag ten feet away. It's easy to say move, but I love the location and I have my own big room. I just cleaned the entire place spotless, and am thinking about placing signs up to remind them to throw their trash in the garbage. "If you make a fucking mess, clean it up!" or something similar.  It is sad it has come to this.. Any advice?

Have you had a talk with your roommate about it?  Putting up signs is pretty passive-aggressive.  The first step is to have a serious sit-down and let your roommate know how you feel and see how he responds.

I hate uncomfortable situations, but this warrants it. I'm a lot older than most my roommates and have been trying to be cool with them but the shits disgusting. It's actually my GF who cleaned the whole place, she does every time she comes over. You think a sit down house meetings is necessary or could I just go talk to one of them and say lets keep it clean like it is now, and I'm tired of cleaning after his friends.

What do you mean by trash? What exactly are they throwing on the ground?

Talk to your roommate and if he doesn't help the situation, just start dumping all the trash in his room.

and if that doesn't work, piss on his bed

Anything, candy wrappers, grocery bags, toilet paper with blood on it. I don't understand why they don't use the garbage! They are exchange students but speak decent English.

I assure you that if you put up signs they're just going to think you're a douchebag and not care.  Yes, I think it absolutely warrants seriously talking to them about it.  They're not going to "get it" if you just mention it to them.  You have to let it be known that you have a serious problem with things and that it isn't a small nuisance.

I've lived with about 15 different people and only one of them was clean enough for my liking.  I now live alone and I would never go back.

I shared a house with 7 people.

Things got bad enough that I brought in my own fridge and put a lock on it. I also build a small lockable door on my part of the cupboard.

I forgot I had water running in the plugged kitchen sink (without drain-hole)one time and flooded two kitchens. After getting rid of the water it was the cleanest both had ever been...

tell them to their face politely. making a sign will make it seem like you have no spine. escalate accordingly.

I agree with the others - have a serious talk with them. Putting up signs wont work and may even make the problem worse.

I havent had a room mate in years since I'm married now, but I had many when I was single. I found you could have both great situations & really awful ones. As they always say, you never know someone until you live with them.

Good luck though.

IME if you do something like put up signs they will just laugh and call you / treat you like a bitch.  I would throw their garbage in their room or clean up only what was  mine so they can see what slobs they are?

If it were my roommates I would just call them the fuck out on being uncivilized manchildren.

Plus they keep to themselves.

Does not your girlfriend being busy cleaning on a regular basis the garbage of what sounds like messy punks bother you because that means that you two have less quality time together? If I had a girl over I'd be :psycrankey: if she was spending time doing that for roommates.

Ahhh roommates. You'll prolly look back and enjoy the times but now that you're in it I'm sure it sucks. I started keep tallies of who was doing the dishes when I had 3 other roommates and people constantly over but it was basically a wall padding my own ego, lol. Sounds like the current situation YOU (or your girlfriend) have to clean if you want the place clean. Sometimes you just gotta do that type thing sucks but it's the truth dude-bro.

Best advice hold on til the lease is up and pick better roommates next time.
