TiT revisited
    #19059110 - 10/30/13 06:23 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Here's my TiT (tub-in-tub incubator).

I haven't used a TiT  in a long time.

Now that I have some experience and more knowledge under my belt, I recently decided to go back to using one.

This is my first trial with it.

I've been monitoring it for several days since I made it. The temperature inside stays between 79.8F and 80.5F.

In this first run, I have 7 quarts of Rye Berries inoculated with agar
4 Petris with MS from a syringe
2 Petris with MS from a print
1 Petri with a transfer from the same agar I used in the jars.

This was all done in a SAB (Still Air Box)

As things develop, I will post results.

Update:

After 48hrs from OP

The wedges in the rye seem to be starting to jump to the grains. About what I'd expect in a short time.

The agar transfer is growing well. It's gone from the size of a small short grain rice to about 5/8".

I can't get a good pic because The Petris all have condensation. They did not have condensation before they went in the TiT.

I just made me a titi for the winter months. I heat with a woodstove so the back bedroom where iI keep my jars gets pretty cold. My grain jars have been colonizing very quick. About 8  to 10 days for g2g jars

been thinking about going back to a TiT myself but i'm slowing down for a minute i'm sure once i pick back up i'll be full on for a TiT.  do you use clear tubs been kinda curious if anyone has done this considering they are pp5 and work perfectly fine...  since so many ppl swear by ambient light during colonization this would be the perfect balance clear tubs with heating right?

damn, so incubating is what's hot in the streets of the shroomery these days, huh?  seen a number of threads on this topic here lately....

i first started lurking on here last winter as i was first getting started, and was thinking about building one of these but everyone swore against it......i actually don't think it's a bad idea at all to do this when it's winter-time and you can't afford to have the heat on at 80 for four months in a row

i wasn't for TiT for a while simply because i had so many problems with mine namely the fact i didn't know what i was doing and contaminated everything...  now that i have a better grasp and am not blaming something that was not actually the problem i'm thinking of it trying again...

It's Halloween time so black tubs are cheap.

If it's cold, you may benefit greatly from one. Mycelium does colonize faster at 80F than at 70F. And definitely faster than at 60F.

My limited testing in regards to light have not shown a difference either way. I don't intentionally colonize in the dark or light.

In regards to incubators and light, there is a lot of "quoting" on these forums, but few "quoters" have actually produced their own evidence and/or data.

Incubators are not necessary in most cases, but they are not outdated. Do your own experiments and report back. I like looking at successful peoples pics and doing what they do. Fuck the quoters.

I will keep this thread updated as things develop.

Sounds like my story. Turns out that TiTs don't cause contams, I cause contams.

A lot of people just tell noobs not to incubate because they do dumb shit like put their jars in a tub on top of a heating pad cooking the bottom of the jars

The trick to TiTs is having steady and even heating.

But I really didn't intend on turning this in to a "how to".

I just wanted to allow people to track my results.

The link in the OP shows how I made mine.

Update

3days 15hours from OP

1 print contaminated. Un-salvageable.

1 print no growth.

1 jar trich

6 jars seem healthy and colonizing.

Neither syringes shows growth.

The transfer had a smooth lump on one side. I made 2 new transfers.

I made a new print agar
