Coffee Grounds for Oyster Spawn?
    #19071186 - 11/01/13 05:41 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So I was cooking up some used coffee grounds for an oyster grow and I got to thinking whether or not using coffee grounds as a replacement for grain spawn would work. I would run it through the autoclave like grain spawn in 5lb bags, maybe moisten it a little more first, and then inoculate it with millet from my grain master jars. Then use the colonized coffee ground to inoc. my bulk straw. Anyone ever try this? I thought it might save me a little in grain cost, I'm spending like 40 bucks a week in grain and this stuff from Starbucks is free.

It might work

Where are you located? Try checking animal feed stores for bulk grains. Oysters are not picky so lots of different grains will work. I (live in the grain belt) am able to get 50 lbs of whole wheat for ~$14. YeeeHa!

I did not have much luck with coffee as a spawn medium.  I had better luck using it as a supplement for my final substrate.  if you make wood spawn you can add the coffee as a supplement and it work well.  hope this help.

John, what didn't work? Did it get contams or did it just colonize too slow?

I made two bags for fun, they don't seem to be recovering as well as the wbs bags I made at the same time, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks!

they contaminate and they are very slow to colonize.  when they do colonize and you go to the finale substrate they are prone to contaminate again.  let us know how it work out for you.

Spent Coffee grounds are about THE most likely substrate to contaminate with mold out if anything you could use.  It is also hard to get the moisture levels just right. If they are too wet, they compact and it is hard to get 100 percent colonization. That said, if ur gung ho, at least add a teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup to buffer the acidity. Trich loves acidic conditions and this might help. Good luck!

Coffee grinds are a bulk substrate additive, not a spawn medium.

Yes, I too have had the same experience, very contam prone. Anyone ever try coffee grounds + verm to get a bit of air in the substrate? That might have a better chance of working. I will try something like that when I get around to it.

I think if you went heavy on the gtg, xfer it may colonize it. would be something cool to try anyways

I have some coprinus comatus spawn in a single jar of really old coffee grounds. No contams AFAIK. It's fully colonized. It took quite a while. It's not densely covered in white either; more like spots here and there. I think that's either because there's not enough water in there or because the coffee is too dense.

did you sterilize? pasteurize? I suppose coprinus sp. prefer slightly more acidic, soil like conditions.
