Habitat: deciduous wood
stems are not hollow
I tried to take a spore print but the spores must be white or they arent many of them

my best guess is some sort of Gymnopilus

It does look like a Pholiota now that you mention it only problem is there are over 150 Pholiota species that is making it difficult to narrow it down to 1 strain

I dont think it totally matters, and I dont think people eat any of the Pholiota sp., just better to recognize the difference between them & Gyms.

Pholiota nameko is sold commercially, but it's definitely not a popular genus to hunt.

To most people it would not matter but with me I take photos of species for a hobby and I like to know the specific species so I categorize the photos fungi are fascinating in many ways not just the psycadelic side

It's called nameko, or sometimes the "butterscotch mushroom", and I've seen it in Asian groceries and in farmers' markets. It's very popular in Japan, and the taste is described as nutty. I haven't tried it yet but I'll get around to it soon.

Pholiota subgenus Pholiota section Adiposae stirps Adiposa cf. aurivella. Probably edible when young.

somehow i see that "probably" as not a glowing recommendation to do so. ask edeee, he's eaten pholiota i believe he said, he might be able to tell you.

your saying that this specimen could potentially be edible but off of the top of my head Pholiota species has many poisonous strains and in retrospect is not worth the risk c?

Puffer fish is actually tasty though. I can't imagine Pholiota being tasty... Especially not a viscid species.

i think, and this is just my rather new, and uninformed opinion, but there are probably better edibles to be found and suggest doing so?
that said, either stick to edibles that are not easily confused with others that might not be, or do some of your own *diligent* research on anything you're going to put into the only body you have. until cloning and personality transference are perfected, i'd say thats the way to go.
with chicken, i'd say feel free to experiment; mushrooms, not the way to go.
just trying to be helpful, once a TI has 'declared' its not often they'll repeat themselves. they have other shrooms to ID
